Bees drop three-point conference match at IUSB

Bees drop three-point conference match at IUSB

It was a career milestone for the St. Ambrose junior forward Abby Wolter in the close 65-62 conference loss at Indiana South Bend this afternoon. The Bees played the Titans tight, but IUSB made late plays down the stretch to close out the game.

As one second remained on the clock, Wolter shot a good two-point jumper. That made field goal moved her into the 1,000 point scoring club for St. Ambrose. Wolter led her team with 20 points and 14 rebounds which earned herself another double-double on the season.

St. Ambrose's Caitlyn Thole knocked down the first two shots of the game to get the Bees on the board early. In no time, the Titans rallied back to take a nine-point lead. An Erica Bostwick layup closed down the scoring for Indiana South Bend, but only for a short time.

Early free throws kept SAU within reach. St. Ambrose answered almost every possession to close out the opening period down by four scores.

It was Thole again to get St. Ambrose on the board to start the second period. A offensive rebound and put-back by Wolter got SAU back on their feet. At the 1:40 mark, Allie Govert found Bostwick who splashed in an open 3-pointer. The score of 35-30 took the Bees into the locker room down five.

SAU made the game interesting when Wolter and Mary Gruber netted scores for the Bees. Olivia Harter assisted Gruber on the 3-pointer. Both scores stalled the game at 35 each.

Indiana South Bend tacked on a six-point run to regain control. But, the same sequence of Wolter and Gruber found the Bees within one. To tie up things again, Govert sunk one-of-two free throws.

Govert knocked in a trey and a layup to give the Bees the lead and close out the third quarter.

The Titans were always right behind with another score or two of their own.

For both sides, the closing period was back-and-forth. Neither team owned more than a two-point lead until the final minute-and-a-half for Indiana South Bend. After a made free throw and layup from Thole, IUSB closed out the game shooting free throws. The Titans shot four-of-four in their final stretch from the charity stripe to win 65-62.

Those four free throws deemed to be the difference as St. Ambrose drops to 5-10 overall and 3-5 in conference.

St. Ambrose struggled at the charity stripe, only shooting a mere 50%.

Thole was a rebound short of earning a double-double. She shot for 13 points and nine boards.

Bostwick sank seven points as Gruber shot for six. Gruber also pulled down five boards and dished out three assists.

Off the bench, Govert sank nine points and earned two assists.

The Bees will now focus their efforts to Trinity Christian next week. Tip off is set for 5:30 p.m. in Palos Heights, Ill.
