St. Ambrose battles the heat at the Midwest Classic

On a hot afternoon, St. Ambrose had an impressive showing at the Midwest Classic hosted by Olivet Nazarene at Aspen Ridge Golf Course in Bourbonnais, Ill., Friday.

With temperatures approaching the 90s, the Bees persevered with the men taking second and the women placing sixth.

The SAU men placed three runners inside the top 20. That included a fourth-place finish from Luke Benes, who finished the 8K race in 26:46, just edging out the fifth-place competitor.

Luke Getz completed the race in 27:33 to take 11th overall and Noah Maske's time of 28:04 was good for 19th.

Ian Eller (28:33) and Ross Willerth (28:36) finished within three seconds of each other and Kale Cartee (28:55) was right behind to round out SAU's top six.

Also running for St. Ambrose were Chris Miserendino (29:23), Gavin Stalzer (29:31), Nathan Boleyn (30:16), Brennon Munch (30:42), Kevin Chaney (31:23), Jack Degner (34:42) and Shyam Devasthali (36:54).

SAU, which had an average time of 27:54, took second in the 10-team event behind host Olivet Nazarene.

The Bee women, who averaged a 21:58 over the 5K course, were sixth out of 11 teams. The University of Chicago won the team championship.

Kaitlyn Knoche led St. Ambrose. She finished 23rd overall in 20:40.

Two others Bees finished inside 22 minutes, with Lexi Minard placing 37th in 21:39 and Rileigh Fortune taking 40th in 21:56.

Allison Hein (22:24), Lauren Johnson (23:08), Carlie Woolm (23:41) and Eileen Elenteny (28:14) also competed.

St. Ambrose will next compete in the Seminole Valley Stampede at Seminole Valley Park in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Oct. 5.
