A big second half surge propels SAU to a 3-1 victory
Yesterday evening, St. Ambrose made their way to Crown Point, Ind. as they faced conference foe, Indiana-Northwest. The Bees used a strong second half performance to take over the match as they secured a 3-1 victory to move them to 5-5-2 overall and 3-2 in conference play. It seems that St. Ambrose has rebounded after a lull in conference play as the Bees are on a two-game winning streak now. In the match, Kendall Wendt opened up the scoring early for the Bees before they conceded a late goal before the break. It seemed to be an even match throughout before a late second half surge is what SAU used to put away IUNW.
IUNW started the game strong as they rallied off a few shots and a corner kick before St. Ambrose could find themselves in the stats line. To kick action off for SAU, Taylor DeSplinter accounted for the first shot on goal for the Bees. That shot created the offensive momentum St. Ambrose needed for the rest of the match. It would only be two corner kicks later as Wendt would find herself with the first goal of the match for the Bees as Mia Vetter was credited with the assist.
With the 1-0 lead, that would not stop the offensive powerhouse of the Bees. For the next ten minutes of play, it was all St. Ambrose as they would exchange shots for corner kicks, trying to find the next goal for some breathing room.
The RedHawks would finally gather their footing to surge up the field to create scoring chances of their own. But, the Bees defense with Grace Kuchar right behind would not allow anything easy.
Right before break, IUNW would breakthrough the solid line of defense to net a goal and tie things up heading into halftime. The Bees and RedHawks entered the break at 1-1 as the Bees looked to make a difference in the final period of play.
After the break, it did not take SAU long before they were in their attacking third once again. Each shot would force a save by the RedHawks goal keeper and keep her on her toes as it was all St. Ambrose. In that span, the Bees only allowed one shot, but Kuchar was there for the scoop up.
Sophia Roszkowski turned hero for the Bees as she snuck a shot right past the RedHawks goal keeper. This goal would become the eventual game-winner in the 69th minute.
St. Ambrose did not take their foot off the gas which lead to a third goal for the Bees. This time, ten minutes later, Charlise Martel would find the back of the net to extend the lead for the Bees in the 79th minute.
IUNW did create scoring chances of their own late in the match but time and time again the defense of SAU stood tall to end the match with a St. Ambrose victory.
The corner kick battle was dominated by SAU as they earned 8 corner kicks throughout the game. The Bees also edged the RedHawks in the shot category with 12 shots total.
It only took all three goal scorers one chance on net to score for the Bees. Wendt, Roszkowski, and Martel all registered one shot on goal in the match. Vetter had the Bees' one assist.
DeSplinter earned two shots on net while Brunson had a team-high four.
Kuchar played all 90 minutes between the posts for SAU as she collected seven saves on eight shots.
The Bees look to extend their win-streak at Holy Cross this weekend in Notre Dame, Ind. Kickoff is slated for 11 a.m. CST at Saints Field.
