A fast start for SAU fizzles quickly
St. Ambrose hosted the Olivet Nazarene Tigers at St. Vincent's Athletic Complex this evening in what we have seen become a conference rivalry over the years. The Bees would dominate from the start then go cold as ONU capitalized on SAU's momentum loss. St. Ambrose would drop the contest 4-1 after scoring within the first six minutes of play.
Kendall Wendt, the Fighting Bees Female Athlete of the Month, would put the Bees on the board in the 6th minute of play after a cross from Taylor DeSplinter that was placed out of reach for ONU's goal keeper. This goal would keep SAU in high spirits as they were locking down the Tigers defensively for the time being.
Things were looking up for St. Ambrose as they had Olivet Nazarene pinned in their defensive third for much of the beginning of the match. Then, ONU would get on the board themselves to wash the game at 1-1.
It would seem to be a back and forth game but ONU scored a late goal within the last minute of play in the opening period. This would give the Tigers a 2-1 lead as they headed to the final period of play.
St. Ambrose would have their scoring chances but could not seem to connect cleanly like Olivet Nazarene. In the 56th minute of play, ONU would capture their third goal of the match for what seemed like complete control of the match.
The Bees would create a few chances off corner kicks but nothing to find the back of the net.
ONU would seal the game as they slipped a ball past Grace Kuchar for goal number four. 20 minutes would be left in the match for St. Ambrose to charge back but unfortunately that would never come. SAU would press but could not connect passes around the net to find a goal for the momentum swing. This 4-1 loss drops SAU to 3-4-2, 1-1 on the season.
St. Ambrose dominated in the shots category with 18 in the match. They took three total corner kicks.
Kuchar played all 90 minutes between the posts for SAU to collect four saves.
This weekend, SAU has an opportunity to rebound in Chicago, Ill. as they travel to Saint Xavier for another conference match. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Deaton Field.
