St. Ambrose shuts out IUSB for first conference win

SAU opened conference play as Indiana-South Bend traveled to town. It has been roughly two weeks since the Bees have hosted. It did take a while for the Bees to settle in but once they gathered their footing, it was all St. Ambrose. SAU scored three goals in the first half but upped that total to eight throughout all 90 minutes of play to capture the 8-0 win.

Throughout the first 20 minutes of play, the Bees had much of the ball but it seemed the rest of the match would continue to be highly competitive. SAU had good looks on goal in this time but nothing would fall until the 20th minute of play. After the first goal was scored, St. Ambrose would kick their offense into gear to score twice more in the opening period.

A Bee uniform was taken down in the box by a Titan defender for a penalty kick to open up the scoring. Kaitlyn Brunson would stand behind the ball and net one into the bottom corner to break open the game. The Bees would lead 1-0 for much of the first.

Until, Mia Hefner put one away after an Abigial Goff service into the box to double the lead. The Bees would pepper the Titans goal keeper time and time again. Just before half, Taylor DeSplinter would return for St. Ambrose after missing a handful of games with an injury. In her return match, Charlise Martel found DeSplinter in stride as she tucked one past the IUSB goalie to make the score 3-0.

Going into halftime, St. Ambrose seemed to have a comfortable lead as they sat at 3-0.

It did not take long for Malu Garuba Coelho to net a goal in the second half to extend the lead. But, St. Ambrose would not get comfortable as they continued to press the Titans defense.

In the 61st minute, Isabella Crawford scored off a pass from Coelho to largen the lead yet again to 5-0. Not much time passed, as it was Coehlo and Kendall Wendt this time around for the Bees to make it 6-0.

Less than two minutes later, Kendall Wendt scored after a redirected cross from Jenna Horst. It would be St. Ambrose from here on out as they only allowed one more shot from IUSB.

To end things, Hefner would score her second of the game after DeSplinter toe poked one off the crossbar for Hefner to place for a finish. This would end things 8-0 for the Bees.

St. Ambrose out shot the Titans 29-2 and held the corner kick edge with five.

Hefner and Coehlo netted two goals apiece. Wendt, DeSplinter, Crawford, and Brunson scored one each for SAU.

Wendt, Horst, Coehlo, Goff, and Martel snagged one assist each.

Grace Kuchar ended with two saves on two shots.

The Bees move to 3-3-2 as they have a quick conference turn around. Olivet Nazarene will travel to St. Vincent's Athletic Complex on Wed., Sep. 25 for a 5 p.m. kick off.
