Bendall, Coelho net goals as the Bees propel over Grand View

After a road stretch for SAU, the Bees hosted the Grand View Vikings at St. Vincent's Athletic Complex this evening before the start of conference play within the upcoming weeks. St. Ambrose netted a goal in each half to upend the Vikings 2-0. This win pushes the Bees to 2-2-2.

Junior, Lauren Bendall scored her first goal of the season to close the first 45 minutes of play for the Bees. After much of the offensive possession, this goal was the first breakthrough for St. Ambrose.

Much of the first half occurred in the offensive third for the Bees as they rattled off eleven shots in the first 45 minutes of play. Before the breakthrough, St. Ambrose would create opportunity time and time again. But, the Vikings were packing their defensive third with numbers to put a stop to the Bees. SAU threatened on corner kicks as well, taking four in the half alone.

In the 39th minute of play, Bendall gathered the ball near the top of the box after a mistouch by the Vikings defender. She struck the ball into the upper left of the net, right past the Vikings goal keeper. Headed into halftime, St. Ambrose would lead 1-0 as the Vikings did not look to threaten much in the half.

A little over five minutes into the second period, Malu Garuba Coelho netted a driven cross from Kaitlyn Brunson to double the Bees lead. As the Bees go up 2-0, it allowed some breathing room. But, SAU would never fold, only allowing one second half shot from the Vikings in the 66th minute.

Another opportunity would arise for St. Ambrose as Nuria Montouto would put a header on net off a Brunson corner kick to force the Vikings keeper into a save.

The 76th minute could have moved the score to 3-0 after a Vikings defender took down a St. Ambrose player in the penalty box. Bendall stood over the ball for the pk shot and drilled a shot low for the Bees. But, the Vikings goalie would come up with a big save to keep the score only 2-0.

Befrore the end of the 90 minutes, Coelho and Isabella Crawford each had a go for the Bees but nothing would come of the opportunities. The Bees would end the match up 2-0 to find themselves back in the win column.

St. Ambrose held the edge in shots and corner kicks. The Bees would outshoot the Vikings 23-2 while not conceding a single corner kick in the match.

Bendall and Coelho each scored for St. Ambrose. Brunson picked up an assist.

Grace Kuchar and the defense would grab a shut out.

SAU takes a break before their next match. They will travel to North Dakota State University, Fri., Sep. 20th. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. CST in Fargo, N.D..
