Wahlen's turn for overtime game-winner in 2-1 victory

Wahlen's turn for overtime game-winner in 2-1 victory

For the third time this season, St. Ambrose earned a win in overtime.

This time, it was Morgan Wahlen's turn to play the hero.

Wahlen's goal on a Stephanie Quigley assist 5:38 into overtime lifted St. Ambrose to a 2-1 win over visiting William Penn Wednesday night at the St. Vincent Athletic Complex.

The win, the Bees' fourth one-goal victory of the season, moved the team to 4-1 overall.

The Bees controlled play for much of the match. SAU ended with a 17-5 edge in shots and a 12-1 advantage in corners.

St. Ambrose got on the board first when Madison Volpert converted a penalty kick in the 36th minute for a 1-0 lead.

But just like last time out when the Bees' 1-0 lead against Grand View evaporated in less than a minute, SAU again let an opponent come right back as William Penn (3-1-1) scored off a rebound of a free kick just 30 seconds after Volpert's goal to even the match at 1-1.

Despite a 6-1 shot advantage for the Bees in the second half, the teams remained tied at 1-1 and moved to overtime.

But less than six minutes into extra time, Wahlen scored her second game-winning goal of the year. She joined Katie Reitz and Tori Timerman with overtime goals this season.

Molly McLaughlin was credited with two saves, both coming in the first half, to earn the win.

The Bees will remain home to next host Viterbo Saturday at 5 p.m.
