Men capture Chicago Sectional, head to Las Vegas for Nationals

For the seventh consecutive season, the SAU men's bowling team is headed to the national collegiate bowling championship tournament. The men put in an inspiring performance at the Chicago sectional by averaging 214 for 64 baker games, and totaling 13,701 pins, the highest pin total for any team in the nation. They beat a sectionals field of 21 teams to claim the sectional championship. St. Ambrose grabbed the lead on Saturday morning after game 16, and it was a lead they never relinquished, ultimately winning by 220 pins.

Other sectionals were contested in Smyrna, Tenn.; Fort Worth, Texas; and Allen Park, Mich. The top four teams from each sectional advance to to the national championship tournament, which will be contested April 16-18 at the South Point Bowling Plaza in Las Vegas. This is the third sectional title in the last six seasons for the Bees; they won the title in Smyrna, Tenn., back in 2019, and in 2022 also in Addison. In 2023 they finished just 10 pins behind Wisconsin-Whitewater, also in the Smyrna sectional.

Team members included Zach Greim, Tommy Burns Jr., Kendric Siders, Lucas Hersrud, Lucas Finley, Nicholas Kidd, Jay Oliva-Colobong, Tyler Close.

In singles competition, sophomore Lucas Hersrud earned one of 24 spots in the national singles championship tournament, held prior to team competition. Hersrud totaled 1437 for his six games, averaging 239.5 and finishing in sixth place in a field of 273 competitors. Hersrud was one of eight competitors earning spots in the Chicago sectional qualifier.

The women's squad finished in 17th place in a 22-team field. Team members were Sammy Upham, Tricia Alvarado, Makenna Verdon, Delaney Walsh, Marissa Bills, Megan Nyenhuis, Brooklyn Schlapkohl and Lily Murphy.

Women's team members Sammy Upham, Tricia Alvarado, Makenna Verdon and Delaney Walsh were making their final appearance as members of the St. Ambrose bowling program.
