Siders leads team to victory at Warhawk Open

Led by sophomore Kendric Siders, the St. Ambrose men's team emerged victorious at this past weekend's Warhawk Open. The team rebounded from a sub-par baker round on Sunday morning by storming through the eight-team finals bracket, going undefeated and posting a perfect 6-0 match play ledger to win the 21-team event.

SAU qualified for the finals in a fifth-place tie after five team games and 16 baker games, with 8402 pins. The top-three qualifiers were Mount Mercy (8966), Calumet (8404) and Saint Xavier (8402). The top eight teams qualified for the match play bracket, with the finals consisting of best-of-3 baker matches. St. Ambrose knocked out No. 4 seed and tournament host Wisconsin-Whitewater 2-0 and then bested top-qualifier Mount Mercy 2-0. In the championship match, the Bees were able to pull away from Marian (Wis.) 2-0 to win the event for the third time in tournament history. St. Ambrose previously earned back-to-back wins at this event in 2014 and 2015, when the event was held in Madison, Wis.

Sophomore Kendric Siders brought his A game with him, and it helped lead the team to victory. The 20-year-old Alaska resident averaged 224.2 to earn a spot on the All-Tournament team. Siders filled 89 of his 93 frames bowled over the 2-day event. Team members included Keaten Bieri (1079-five games), Zach Greim (1046-five games), Nicholas Kidd (784-four games), Lucas Hersrud (656-three games), Tommy Burns Jr. (345-two games), Tyler Close (174-one game) and Kevin Magnuson.

Both men's JV squads also performed well, qualifying for the match play finals in a 17-team JV division. JV1 led the event with an 8116 pinfall, while JV2 qualified third with 7771. Saint Xavier, the No. 4 seed, knocked out SAU JV1 in the semifinals in a close match 2-1, and then beat SAU JV2 in the championship match by the same margin.

JV1 was led by Jay Oliva-Colobong, who averaged 218.8 for his five games. His teammates were Evan White (1057-five games), Wyatt Honecker (1013-five games), Logan Boll (894-five games), Jaxon Robinson (402-two games), Josh Prowse (319-two games), Raiden Nakagawa (172-one game) and Will Young.

JV2 team members were Chayce Stouffer (1006-five games), Anthony Mastroianni (976-four games), Myles Breemeersch (874-four games), Eli Haack (693-four games), Charlie Wooldridge (586-three games), Ahren Barnickel (363-two games), Brendan DeWerth (182-one game) and Juny Almeida (163-one game).

The women earned the No. 7 seed to advance to the match play finals before losing 2-1 to No. 2 seed Saint Xavier. SXU would win all three of their matches to capture the tournament title. Nineteen teams competed in the two-day tournament.

Women's team members included Marissa Bills (1028-five games), Tricia Alvarado (971-five games), Sammy Upham (700-four games), Haven Hospodar (686-four games), Madison Holevoet (485-three games), Maddie Ksobiech (454-three games) and Delaney Walsh (141-one game).

The women's JV team finished fifth in a field of six teams. Team members included Makenna Verdon (819-five games), Lily Murphy (753-five games), Brooklyn Schlapkohl (713-five games), Shay Edwards (704-five games) and Sam Lundvall (676-five games).

Men's and women's varsity compete next week in a pair of Tier 1 events at South Point in Las Vegas, Nev., before heading into the Christmas break.
