Bees blow out Eagles in conference win
St. Ambrose blew out the Eagles of Judson University 89-43 this afternoon in Lee Lohman Arena. The 89 points that the Bees put up this afternoon was a season-high for SAU. SAU put up 30 scores in the opening period alone as SAU was lights out and shot over 50% from the field. Four Bees (Olivia Harter, Abby Wolter, Mary Gruber, and Carrieanne Hungate) scored in double figures for St. Ambrose.
SAU allowed the Eagles to stick around at first. The Bees only held a one-point lead after almost three minutes of play. Then, St. Ambrose caught fire to go on a 15-point run backed by three 3-point buckets by Harter (2) and Gruber. Gruber and Wolter also added in layups for the Bees. After this run, the Bees never looked back.
Another 3-pointer by Harter closed out the 30-point opening period for the Bees.
St. Ambrose never waivered as Allie Govert started the second quarter with an old-fashioned three-point play at the 9:32 mark. Judson did find some offensive rhythm, but the Bees outpaced their efforts to score 49 first-half points which was capped by a Payton Calouette layup.
After the break, three Bees scored before the Eagles were able to find a bucket at the 8:27 mark in the third period.
SAU had another huge quarter as Caitlyn Thole, Erica Bostwick, Elly Doe, and Isabella Hutchinson all chipped in with scores. The Bees sunk 28 third-quarter scores to lead 77-34.
A Hungate layup forced a Judson timeout early in the final period. Doe shot and sank two technical free throws as Hutchinson netted a layup to end the scoring for SAU.
This 89-43 victory moves the Bees to 8-13 overall and 6-8 in the CCAC conference.
The Bees won the rebound battle by four rebounds, 38-34. St. Ambrose scored 29 points off turnovers and 26 points came off the bench.
Wolter led SAU with 21 as Gruber trailed with 15 scores. Harter scored 12 and Hungate netted 11. Thole added in eight.
Thole grabbed eight boards and two assists. Calouette, Wolter, and Gruber each grabbed five boards.
Gruber collected a team-high five assists while Calouette and Thole were credited with two blocks apiece.
The Bees will look forward to hosting conference foe and leader in the CCAC, Governors State this week. SAU will tip off at 5:30 p.m. this Wed. in Lee Lohman Arena.
