Critical free throws propel Bees to overtime win

St. Ambrose mustered up a five-point overtime performance in the 67-64 win over the Trolls of Trinity Christian earlier this evening. Throughout the game, the Bees saw improvement in their percentage from the charity stripe. That would prove to show in overtime as St. Ambrose drained three-of-four from the free-throw line. Caitlyn Thole scored the final points for the Bees on an important jumper as 52 seconds remained on the clock. 

SAU started on their heels but found their rhythm to end the opening period with back-to-back 3-point shots from Abby Wolter and Thole to lead by two.

The first seven minutes of the second quarter deemed to be back-and-forth basketball until Erica Bostwick, Mary Gruber, Payton Calouette, and Olivia Harter went on a run of their own. These scores extended the Bees lead to as much as eight scores. SAU led 31-25 as they headed into the break.

Just out of the break, a layup and free throws from Wolter added to the lead of St. Ambrose. The Bees found themselves up by as much as ten points early in the third period. TCC surged back within one score.

The Bees and Trolls traded buckets the rest of the quarter. St. Ambrose entered the fourth quarter with the lead but only had a field goal to cushion.

Wolter put the team on her back early on as she drilled a consecutive layup and 3-pointer. This forced Trinity Christian into a timeout to regroup.

It worked for the Trolls as they found themselves hand-in-hand again with the Bees. The Trolls even took the lead with 4:39 left on the clock.

Allie Govert knocked the ball loose and Wolter scored a bucket to get the Bees back in the game. Thole followed up with her knock-down jump shot with just over three minutes left in action.

Both teams traded scores to force an eventual overtime as St. Ambrose handled business in overtime with a 67-64 conference win. This win moves St. Ambrose to 6-10 overall and 4-5 in conference play.  

The Bees took advantage of the Trolls' turnovers, scoring 20 points off their mistakes.

Wolter, who just scored her 1,000th career point led the way for the Bees with 23 scores and eight boards. Harter tied Wolter with eight rebounds. Harter scored seven herself.

Thole chipped in 12 points as Calouette scored eight. Thole earned seven takeaways and six boards. Off the bench, Calouette grabbed seven rebounds. 

Bostwick and Gruber each registered six scores.

SAU will now look to hosting St. Francis this weekend in Lee Lohman Arena. Tip off is set for 1 p.m. in Davenport, Iowa.
