Wolter's 28 not enough in loss to Ohio Christian
Abby Wolter's 28 points weren't enough to overcome an overall poor shooting effort for the Bees in a 68-51 loss to Ohio Christian on the first day of the Taylor Trojan Classic in Upland, Ind., Tuesday.
Wolter was fantastic, hitting 10-of-17 shots from the floor, including 2-of-3 from beyond the arc, in reaching a new season-best in scoring.
But the rest of the team struggled. St. Ambrose (2-7) shot less than 32 percent overall, and removing Wolter's numbers, reduced that number to less than 22 percent. Wolter made two 3-pointers in three attempts while the rest of the team combined to go 1-of-14 from deep.
Despite the shooting difficulties, the Bees were able to build a first-half lead.
After trailing by as many as six points in the opening quarter, and down 19-14 early in the second, SAU came to life.
Wolter knocked down a three and converted a layup following an Elly Doe steal to tie the game at 19-19. Payton Calouette scored inside and after Ohio Christian (5-7) tied the score at 21-21, Kania Starks buried a 3-pointer for a 24-21 SAU advantage. The Trailblazers got a point back on a free throw, but a three-point play from Wolter gave the Bees a 27-22 lead with less than two minutes remaining in the half.
Those would be the team's final points of the half. St. Ambrose missed its final four shots and came up empty on two attempts from the line as Ohio Christian closed with a 10-0 run to take a 32-27 lead into the break.
The Bees were within 37-31 early in the third period before the Trailblazers scored the next nine points to build a 46-31 edge. The deficit was double figures the rest of the way.
Calouette, the only other Bee to hit at least half of her shots from the field, was 4-of-8 in scoring nine points. She also grabbed nine rebounds. Caitlyn Thole finished with seven points and seven rebounds.
Starks (three) and Doe (two) combined for five points off the Bee bench. Olivia Harter added two points to go along with team highs of 10 rebounds and four assists.
St. Ambrose will look to bounce back on the final day of the Trojan Classic Wednesday when the Bees battle Indiana Kokomo.
