First quarter to forget haunts St. Ambrose

It was a first quarter to forget for the Bees.

St. Ambrose (1-4, 0-1 CCAC) was just 1-of-17 from the field in the opening quarter and never recovered in an 85-44 loss at St. Francis Wednesday night.

While SAU shot less than six percent from the floor, the Saints shot at a 52-percent clip in opening up a 26-2 lead after one. The Bees misfired on all seven of their 3-point attempts in the first period.

Erica Bostwick provided the points, knocking down a long jumper to put the score at 12-2 with just under four minutes left. St. Ambrose missed its final four shots of the frame and committed three late turnovers allowing St. Francis (5-1, 1-0 CCAC) to close with 14 straight points.

USF hit a 3-pointer to start the second-quarter scoring and build a 29-2 lead before Mary Gruber buried a three for SAU.

The Bees outscored the Saints 16-13 in the second quarter but the early deficit was too much to overcome. St. Francis put things away with a 28-point third quarter.

The early struggles contributed to SAU shooting less than 26 percent from the field for the game. USF shot at 50 percent.

Bostwick came off the bench to lead the Bees with 10 points and eight rebounds. Caitlyn Thole also scored 10.

Gruber finished with nine points and Payton Calouette netted seven. Olivia Harter, who pulled down seven rebounds, and Elly Doe each scored three points. Caroline Cool added two.

St. Ambrose will host Olivet Nazarene Monday.
