Bees roll to 71-44 victory over Lawrence Tech

It all came together for St. Ambrose Saturday.

The Bees shot better than 46 percent from the floor. They limited the opposition to less than 29 percent shooting. They grabbed a 39-29 rebounding advantage. And they forced 18 turnovers while commiting only 11 themselves.

It all added up to a 71-44 win over Lawrence Tech on the second day of the LTU Tournament in Southfield, Mich.

After falling behind 3-2 in the game's opening minutes, it was all St. Ambrose.

SAU answered the early deficit with a 14-0 run. Payton Calouette, Olivia Harter, Abby Wolter, Caitlyn Thole and Elly Doe all scored during the spurt that put the Bees in front 16-3. The margin was 18-7 after one quarter as the Bees limited the Blue Devils to 2-of-11 shooting in the opening frame.

St. Ambrose continued to pull away from there.

The lead grew to 32-16 at the half. It ballooned to 48-25 after three quarters. And it ended with the 27-point victory.

Calouette led the way. She was 9-of-12 from the floor in finishing with a game-high 22 points. She also pulled down seven rebounds.

Thole was 6-of-10 shooting in scoring 16 points. She collected a double-double by grabbing 11 boards. Wolter scored 13 on 5-of-11 shooting to go along with five rebounds and five assists.

The top three scorers for the Bees went a combined 20-of-33 for 51 points.

But SAU got contributions elsewhere.

Mary Gruber finished with eight points, five rebounds and four assists. Harter and Caroline Cool each dropped in five points. Doe and Emma Rutter also each scored. Kania Starks recorded three steals. Erica Bostwick and Isabella Hutchinson each had one of the team's four blocked shots.

St. Ambrose will visit Mount Mercy Wednesday.
