Bees start the CCAC Tournament with two wins on day one

St. Ambrose started the CCAC Championship Tournament hot with 9-8 (8 innings) and 3-2 nail-biter wins against Calumet and St. Francis. On day two, they fell to Saint Xavier 6-9. On day three, the Bees clawed their way back with a big 8-2 win against Calumet in the bottom half of the bracket.

St. Ambrose 9, Calumet St. Joseph 8 (8 innings)

In game one on May 2, the Bees were playing from behind. They started chipping away at the Crimson Wave's seven-run lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Kylee Claypool came up to the plate and sent a double out to left field that brought home Ellie Downing from second base. In the following at-bat, Brynnlin Kroymann hit a sacrifice fly out to center field that Becca Haag was able to tag up on and score from third base.

The Bees had a breakout inning in the sixth, scoring four runs. Kroymann sent a double deep into center field, which brought Claypool, Haag, and Downing across home plate. Kylie Schult sent a hit of her own to the outfield that sent pinch runner Liz Garcia home. In the bottom of the seventh, Claypool singled to bring in two runs to tie the game at 8-8 and send the game into extra innings. Downing closed out the game with a single to left field that scored Justice Krus from third base.

Claypool led the team in hits with four, followed by Downing with three, Mady Reed and Mya Millsaps with two each, and Kroymann, Schult, and Krus with a hit apiece. Kroymann led with four RBIs, Claypool with three, and Downing and Schult with one.

Boysen picked up the win after coming in during the fourth inning and struck out seven Crimson Wave batters. Leah Maro got the start, pitching two innings, followed by Allyson Harrold pitching one and two-thirds innings with three strikeouts.

St. Ambrose 3, St. Francis 2

Game two was similarly close to the one earlier in the day. The Bees struck first, scoring the first run in the top of the third inning. Millsaps took first base on a walk and then stole second base. Downing doubled in the next at-bat, which brought Millsaps around the bases. St. Ambrose extended their lead in the fifth inning with two more runs. Schult led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a Reagan Engberg sacrifice bunt before Anna Engberg came in to pinch run for her. Next at-bat, Reed drove the ball deep into left field, resulting in a triple and bringing home A. Enberg. Millsaps then sent a sacrifice fly out to left field, allowing Reed to tag up and score. The Bees were able to hold the Fighting Saints to two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to secure the lead.

Reed led the team with two hits; Downing, Haag, Claypool, and Schult each had one hit in the game. Also, Reed, Millsaps, and Downing had one RBI.

Boysen earned her second win of the day, going 6.1 innings and striking out 2 batters. Maro came in for the save, pitching the final two-thirds of the seventh inning.

St. Ambrose 6, Saint Xavier 9

St. Ambrose struck first against the Cougars, earning four runs in the first two innings. Similar to the game the previous day against St. Francis, Millsaps walked and subsequently stole second. Downing sent the ball through the infield, bringing in Millsaps for the first run. In the second, Reed flew out to the right fielder, which scored Schult from third. In the following at-bat, Millsaps sent a single up the middle, pushing Krus across home. Finally, Haag drove a double down the left field line, bringing Millsaps around to home. The Cougars came back with nine unanswered runs in their half of the third inning. The Bees made a comeback attempt in the fourth inning when Reed led off with a single to left, but ultimately finished at third due to a fielding error. She then scored on a Downing single to the gap in right center field. Right after that, Haag sent a double out to left center and drove in Downing.

Downing had three hits in the game, Haag had two hits, and Reed, Millsaps, and Kroymann had one hit each. Downing and Haag each had 2 RBIs, while Reed and Millsaps had one RBI.

Maro pitched 6 innings, collecting 3 strikeouts.

St. Ambrose 8, Calumet St. Joseph 4

Moving down to the elimination side of the bracket on Sunday, the Bees faced the Crimson Wave again in the tournament. The Bees quickly got out to a seven-run lead in two innings. Reed led off the game reaching first base via a hit by pitch. She found herself on third on a passed ball during Millsaps' drop third strike at bat. The two runners quickly scored when Haag came to the plate and reached first base safely after laying down a bunt to the third baseman. She scored in the next at-bat.

Krus and R. Engberg started the second inning with singles to the outfield and crossed home when Reed sent a double out to center field. Right after that, Millsaps sent a hit of her own out to center field, sending home Reed. Finally. Kroymann sent a sacrifice fly ball out to the outfield, propelling Millsaps across home plate. The Bees scored their final run in the fifth inning when R. Engberg got on base by a bunt and ran home on a Reed hit to the shortstop.

Millsaps, Haag, and R. Engberg each collected two hits. Reed, Kroymann, and Krus recorded one hit apiece. Reed accumulated three RBIs, while Millsaps, Haag, Claypool, and Kroymann gathered one.

Boysen earned the win going four innings and sitting down four Crimson Wave batters. Harrold came in to finish the final three innings of the game.

 

The Championship game against Saint Xavier was suspended due to weather in the top of the second inning. The teams were tied 3-3. Play will resume Monday at noon.
