SAU drops doubleheader to Fort Lauderdale
St. Ambrose let a 2-0 lead slip away over the last two innings in a 3-2 loss to Fort Lauderdale in the first game of a doubleheader in Oakland Park, Fla., Monday. The Eagles carried that momentum into the second game, sweeping the twin bill with an 8-0 victory.
Ellie Downing and Kylee Claypool had RBIs to stake the Bees to the two-run lead entering the sixth inning.
But in the bottom of the sixth, Fort Lauderdale struck for a pair of runs to tie the game at 2-2. Then, in the bottom of the seventh, a walk-off single plated the game-winning run for the Eagles.
Downing, Claypool, Mady Reed, Parker Leonard and Paige Kirkman had the five St. Ambrose hits.
Leah Maro was the hard-luck loser. She struck out six in the complete-game effort.
UFTL took control early in the second game, scoring three runs in both the first and third innings, sandwiched around a two-run second inning, to win in five innings.
SAU finished with just three hits - a double from Brynnlin Kroymann and singles from Leonard and Bianca Shorter.
Shorter took the loss. Kylie Schult pitched the final 1 1/3 innings.
St. Ambrose will play a doubleheader at Keiser Tuesday.
