St. Ambrose on Spring Break trip

St. Ambrose started its annual Spring Break trip to Florida by playing four games at the 2025 Space Coast Spring Games in Melbourne Fla.

Aquinas 3, St. Ambrose 1
St. Ambrose stranded eight runners, including six over the first four innings, in a 3-1 loss to Aquinas to open the trip. The Bees left two on in the first, fourth and seventh innings. Ellie Downing's single in the fourth plated Liz Garcia to cut SAU's deficit to 3-1 in the fourth. Kylie Schult followed with a hit and took second on the throw as the Bees had two in scoring position with only one out. But St. Ambrose would come up empty as the next two batters were retired. Aquinas scored its three runs in the third, benefitting from a Bee error during the frame. Anna Engberg, Taylor Martyn, Paige Kirkman and Mady Reed also had hits in the loss. Allyson Harrold struck out five while allowing only the one earned run over six innings.

Lawrence Tech 14, St. Ambrose 3 (6 inn.)
Lawrence Tech set the tone with a five-run first inning. LTU scored two more in the second and put the game away with a six-run sixth. Mady Reed was involved in all three Bee runs. She scored on Reagan Engberg's RBI groundout in the bottom of the first, lifted a sacrifice fly to center to plate Kylee Claypool in the second, and singled in Claypool in the fourth. Reed and Becca Haag each collected two of SAU's eight hits. Claypool, Engberg, Ellie Downing and Parker Leonard had the other St. Ambrose hits. Leah Maro was charged with the loss. Ada Boysen, Bianca Shorter and Alyssa Lowery also pitched for the Bees.

St. Ambrose 2, Northwestern Ohio 1 (8 inn.) - Game 1
Justice Krus lifted a fly ball to left to score Anna Engberg with what proved to be in the winning run in the top of the eighth inning of a 2-1 win over Northwestern Ohio. That broke a 1-1 tie in a game that remained at 0-0 through four innings. Paige Kirkman started the scoring with a single in the top of the fifth to bring in Taylor Martyn. The Racers tied the game in the sixth which ultimately forced extra innings. With the potential tying run on second, Allyson Harrold got a strikeout and two fly outs to end the game. Harrold went the distance to pick up the win, striking out eight over the eight innings. She surrendered just three hits and the one run. Kirkman finished with two hits, with Krus, Martyn, Becca Haag and Reagan Engberg added one hit apiece.

St. Ambrose 7, Northwestern Ohio 4 - Game 2
St. Ambrose raced to a 5-0 lead in sweeping the doubleheader with a 7-4 victory in the second game. Paige Kirkman had RBIs in both the first and fifth innings. Becca Haag was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fifth to plate another. An error on Kylee Claypool's ground ball allowed Mady Reed to score for the 5-0 lead. Northwestern Ohio got two runs back in the top of the sixth, but in the bottom of the frame, Reed ripped an RBI double to score Reagan Engberg and Kirkman followed with an RBI single for a 7-2 advantage. The Racers tacked on two final runs in the seventh. Kirkman and Reed combined for all four of SAU's hits with Kirkman driving in three total runs. Ada Boysen earned the complete-game victory.
