Pitching powers Bees to two victories

Six different pitchers combined to throw 16 scoreless innings as St. Ambrose picked up shutout wins of 1-0 over Saint Mary (Neb.) in nine innings and 3-0 over Clarke Sunday in the Ambrose Dome.

SAU outlasted Saint Mary in an extra-inning pitchers' duel in the Bees' first game of the day.

With the game scoreless into the bottom of the ninth, and the International Tiebreaker rule in effect, Shai Erdrich started the frame on second base. She promptly stole third, which was her third stolen base of the game. Reagan Engberg ended things with a walk-off double to plate Erdrich with the game-winning run.

It was Engberg's second hit of the contest. Erdrich, Ellie Downing and Paige Kirkman had the Bees' other hits.

But the story of the win was the pitching performance of Ada Boysen and Cara Linnenkamp. Boysen allowed just two hits and a pair of walks over seven innings. She struck out five. Linnenkamp then came in and struck out two while pitching the final two frames to earn the win.

Four pitchers then combined in a five-hit shutout of Clarke.

Leah Maro started and allowed one hit over three innings. Kylie Schult recorded five outs to pick up the win before Bianca Shorter tossed 1 1/3 innings. Alyssa Lowery worked out of a bases-loaded situation in the seventh to preserve the win and earn the save.

The St. Ambrose offense pushed across a single run in each of the first three innings.

Mya Millsaps laid down a sacrifice bunt that scored Erdrich to give SAU a 1-0 lead in the first. In the second inning, Laurel Politsch doubled to plate Leonard for a 2-0 advantage. Then in the third, it was a double off the bat of Boysen that scored Kylee Claypool with what proved to be the final run of the day.

Seven different Bees - Erdrich, Claypool, Boysen, Leonard, Politsch, Bianca Erickson and Mady Reed - had hits in the win.

St. Ambrose will host its second of three Dome Tournaments next Saturday. SAU will face Monmouth and Mount Mercy.
