Men defeat Olivet Nazarene; women drop dual

St. Ambrose split duals at Olivet Nazarene Saturday. The Bee men won 162-96 while the women fell 152-107.

The SAU men crowned champions in eight of the 11 individual events.

Cory Werrett and Mikhi Hassim each touched first in two events. Werrett won the 100-yard freestyle in 47.33 seconds, finishing just ahead of Jonas Friess (48.49) and Panagiotis Pappous (48.91). Werrett also won the 50-yard freestyle in 21.19 seconds. Riley Stevenson was second in 21.58 seconds and Pappous placed fourth.

Hassim won the 100-yard butterfly in 52.14 seconds. Walter De Jongh was third in 54.95 seconds and Juan Gomez was fourth. Hassim took first in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:00.39. Luke Thomas was second in 1:01.08 and Thomas Noller placed sixth.

Jayden Coetzer (1:58.53), Gavin Hopewell (2:02.76) and Luke Sproule (2:06.22) took the top three spots in the 200-yard backstroke. Carter Gaber won the 100-yard backstroke in 54.49 seconds. Hopewell was third in 55.19 seconds and Gonzalo Saenz was fourth. Marat Usov was the champion in the 400-yard individual medley in 4:18.76. Coetzer was fourth and Sproule fifth.
Friess won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:48.55 and was runner-up in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:45.63. Gomez was third in the 200 free in 1:48.06 and Benny Zarhin was fourth. Gomez was second in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:01.43. Sproule finished fourth and Vincent Meo was sixth. Thomas (2:15.08), Usov and Noller came in third, fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 200-yard breaststroke.

Werrett, Hassim, Stevenson and Brett Jones won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:24.94. Gaber, Pappous, Carter Prull and Lucas Ascua took third. The 400-yard medley relay team of Gaber, Thomas, Stevenson and Jones were second in 3:37.73. Hopewell, Coetzer, Usov and Zarhin finished third.

Anna Gute won a pair of individual events for the St. Ambrose women. She took the 50-yard freestyle in 25.01 seconds and won the 100-yard freestyle in 55.25 seconds. Sophia Ewanic was runner-up in the 100 free in 57.02 seconds. Amber Warak was fifth. Rylie Steinkamp's time of 27.03 seconds was third in the 50 free with Sarah Priewe placing sixth.

Bridget O'Grady was the champion of the 100-yard breaststroke, winning in 1:09.37. Kennedy Capman (1:11.55) finished third and Kate Henson was fourth. The other SAU winner was Grace Bobeldyk, who took the 200-yard butterfly in 2:18.72. Emily Henson placed third in 2:35.53.

The Bees took second place in five other individual events. O'Grady led a second-third-fourth charge in the 200-yard breaststroke, coming in second in 2:30.75. Capman was third in 2:35.80 and Irene Artabe finished fourth.

Leyre Antonanzas was runner-up in both the 400-yard individual medley (4:50.84) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:15.27). Capman took fourth in the 400 IM, while Riley Loeffler was sixth in the 200 back. Bryn Kiley was also second in a pair of events. She took second in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:00.56, with Annaliese Bowser placing fourth and Sylvia Zipperer taking sixth. Kiley also took second in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:27.92. Bobeldyk (5:30.84) was third and Annaliese Bowser fourth.

Steinkamp finished third in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:10.25. Emily Henson was fourth. Madeline Piper was fourth in the 100-yard backstroke.

Ruthie Gemmen, Kiley, Artabe and Bobeldyk were second in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:44.51. Artabe, O'Grady, Antonanzas and Gute were second in the 400-yard medley relay in 4:10.94.

SAU will have a bit of a break before next competing in the Midland Invitational in Fremont, Neb., Dec. 4-5.
