SAU shutout by Viterbo
SAU played host to the V-Hawks from Viterbo University at St. Vincent's Athletic Complex yesterday evening. Early on, the Bees caught Viterbo on their heels and pinned them in their defensive half but St. Ambrose could not capitalize on the early offensive pressure they applied towards Viterbo. The Bees held the edge at the beginning of the match as they owned the first four shots of the match and the first corner kick. For fifteen straight minutes the Bees put on an absolute clinic, but would have nothing to show for it as they dropped the decision 5-0. It was a decisive St. Ambrose team as they held the edge in shots 15-10 but never seemed to find the back of the net.
While SAU owned much of the opening minutes of the match, Viterbo created a one-on-one opportunity with the Bee's goalkeeper to go up 1-0 in the 20th minute. But, St. Ambrose did not back down as they rallied back for a few more shots before the V-Hawks capitalized again. This time, Viterbo netted a header off a free kick to extend their lead to 2-0.
For the remainder of the half, the Bees did not muster up any scoring chances for themselves as they entered the break down 2-0.
Shortly after the half time break, Joe Campbell stood over a corner kick which resulted in an opportunity for Owen Hull, but that would sneak wide.
In the 53rd minute, the V-Hawks scored their third goal of the match to create a deeper hole for St. Ambrose to crawl out of to get back into the match. To dig themselves out of this hole, SAU went on short offensive spurts and still had nothing to show for their efforts.
Viterbo put away the Bees with their fourth and fifth goal of the match as the Bees suffered a 5-0 loss. This loss drops SAU to 2-9-3 overall and 2-6-1 in conference play.
St. Ambrose doubled the V-Hawk's corner kick number with six corner kicks in the match.
David Sanchez-Teba led the Bees with two shots on net. Thomas Gaither and German Worm followed right behind with one apiece.
Kai Domagala was the starting keeper and earned three saves on the night. Dawson Yegge relieved Domagala of his duties to finish out the match.
SAU will next host (RV) Governors State for their final regular season match. Kick off is slated for this Sat. at 12 p.m. at St. Vincent's Athletic Complex. The seniors will be recognized before the match.
