St. Ambrose nets an abundance of goals in first conference victory

Yesterday evening at Joliet Memorial Stadium, the Bees found their offensive rhythm to match their total goal count for the year in a single match as eight different Bees scored in a conference blow out. St. Ambrose netted eight goals in 83 minutes of play to earn the 8-1 decision over conference foe, St. Francis. SAU struck first but they allowed the Fighting Saints to stick around early in the match as USF scored no more than four minutes after the Bees captured their first goal. Then, St. Ambrose netted a goal just over a minute later and ran away with the match.

To start things off, it was all St. Ambrose early on with a shot by David Sanchez-Teba sneaking just high to hit the cross bar. This left the Bees still searching for a goal to open the match up.

Finally, on the seventh shot for the Bees, Sam Flello took a pass from Joe Campbell to create a one-on-one with the goal keeper to net the first goal for SAU. But, St. Ambrose did not keep that lead for long as St. Francis powered up the field to their offensive half. In the 27th minute, the Fighting Saints tied the match at one apiece.

The Bees did not fold easily. German Worm's top-shelf goal broke open the game for SAU. It was Sam Flello, the first goal scorer who registered the assist. This goal opened the flood gates for the Bees as they scored twice more before break.

Less than two minutes later, Thomas Gaither showed a terrific individual effort off a free kick to extend the lead for the Bees to 3-1. St. Francis tried for a comeback but they were denied time and time again by the defense of St. Ambrose.

The scoring cooled off for the Bees, but only for a bit as Owen Hull smashed in a cross from a Ricardo Ronconi defensive effort to put the Saints under pressure. The Bees headed into break with a comfortable lead at 4-1.

After the halftime break, it took the Bees no time to start the scoring action. Joe Campbell named himself in the stat line after Sanchez-Teba knocks a free kick off the post for a second time this game that falls to the feet of Campbell for a tap in goal.

USF continued looking for chances but were stood up by Kai Domagala and the Bees defense. SAU's offensive power stalled a bit as it took them to the 63rd minute for the next goal. This time, Thomas Gaither served in a corner kick which Sanchez-Teba headed towards net and Gus Stevens finally put away for the Bees sixth goal.

Not much action came for either side, besides a goal called off after an offside call for St. Ambrose. But, Owen Gannaway threaded a pass across to Hunter Lillie who was striding into the box to put the ball away to make the score 7-1.

To end the scoring for the Bees it was Ricardo Ronconi who dribbled the keeper after a mistouch from the Saints defender but his shot knocked off the post. To save the day, Parker Beck was there for the finish to extend the Bees' lead to 8-1 which ended as the final decision of the match.

This win moves the Bees to 1-8-3 overall and 1-5-1 in conference play. St. Ambrose held the edge in shots with 26 total shots, 14 of those being on net.

Domagala grabbed two saves in the match as Dawson Yegge subbed in with just over ten minutes left to ride out the rest of the contest in goal.

When looking ahead for the Bees, they will look to upend Calumet this Sat. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. CST at East Chicago Central High School in East Chicago, Ind.
