Bees stumble on the road at Saint Xavier

Another conference match for the Bees resulted in a 2-0 loss at Deaton Field in Chicago yesterday afternoon. Saint Xavier took advantage once in each half to upend the Bees 2-0 despite St. Ambrose owning the shot category. The Bees could not seem to get anything going in either half as they outshot the Cougars 13-12.

St. Ambrose managed their first shot on net within the first eight minutes of play to test the Cougars goal keeper early. Jörn Reck and Eli Elliott forced a goal keeper save on each of their shots.

The Bees would find themselves in foul trouble as they started to pick up yellow cards. This would force SAU to remain cautious going forward.

Just before half, a Saint Xavier player would be taken down in the penalty box resulting in a free penalty kick for them. SXU found themselves on the board shortly after with the 1-0 lead.

Emotions would continue to heighten for both sides shortly before half.

Sam Flello cranked a shot up seconds before the half ended but it would fly wide right as the Bees entered the break down 1-0.

Looking to regroup in the second half, SAU started the second period with a strong offensive driving force. The Bees created a few scrambles around the penalty box to create corner kick opportunities and scoring chances from those. SXU locked down defensively to not allow the Bees a breakthrough.

In the 71st minute, SAU thought their luck was about to turn as Ethan Holke smacked a sailing shot towards net but it would find the crossbar rather than the back of the net.

Just as the Bees were gaining offensive momentum, the Cougars would charge down the field to double their lead.

SAU would not back down offensively or defensively as they continued to get stuck in on tackles. Until, St. Ambrose would fall to ten players after Brady Butler was sent off with his second yellow card of the match. The Bees seemed down after this while picking up more slack defensively.

Dawson Yegge would check into the game for the Bees to defend the Cougars second penalty kick of the match. Yegge would come up with the clutch time save to keep the score at 2-0.

That final score would conclude the match as the Bees fall to 0-5-2, 0-2.

Dylan Ollendieck, Sam Flello, Ricardo Ronconi, Matheus Migueis, Eli Elliott, Ethan Holke, and Jörn Reck all registered a shot on goal with Elliott accounting for two on net.

Kai Domagala earned two saves on four shot attempts. Yegge earned two saves, one being a penalty kick.

St. Ambrose continues to look for a win as they travel to Elgin, Ill. for the next conference match vs. Judson. Kick off is scheduled for Wed., Oct. 1 at 1 p.m.
