St. Ambrose opens conference play
St. Ambrose men's soccer opened conference play this evening as the Olivet Nazarene Tigers were in town for a rival match up. What seemed to be a tale of two halves for the Bees ended in a 2-0 loss. SAU conceded both goals in the opening period but made the right adjustments and locked in defensively to control the final period of play.
Not much offensive power was generated for St. Ambrose as they only registered three shots in the first half. But, the best chance of the half would come after the Bees pulled the goalie off his line and Charlie Leinart fired a shot from distance but it would sail high of the cross bar.
The Tigers jumped on the Bees quickly after with a goal in the 15th minute of play after a turnover in the middle of the field for St. Ambrose.
ONU would double their lead after they netted what would be their final goal of the match in the 31st minute.
SAU would create two more chances to force a Tigers' goal keeper save. Otherwise, St. Ambrose would head into half time down by two goals.
In the final period of play, the Bees made the right adjustments to put the Tigers on their heels as SAU controlled much of the period. The Bees were able to string together shots on goal and corner kicks to give themselves opportunities. ONU was pinned in their own defensive third for most of the half but the Bees could not come out with a goal. This led to a 2-0 loss in conference.
St. Ambrose notched six total shots, three in each period.
Kai Domagala was good for all 90 minutes in net as he collected three saves on five shots.
Looking ahead for the Bees, they travel to Chicago, Ill. for the next conference match up with Saint Xavier. Game time is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. at Deaton Field.
