St. Ambrose goes cold in the second half in loss to Mount Mercy

Sam Flello led the way as the Fighting Bees only goal scorer in the 2-1 loss in Cedar Rapids late last evening. The Mustangs held the upper hand in shooting totals, which made the difference in the match, upending the Bees 21-3. This loss drops SAU to 0-2-1 as they continue to search for their first win of the season.

It seemed to be a tale of two halves for the Bees as they found a goal in the opening period but could not secure one late to earn a draw for themselves. St. Ambrose earned two corner kicks in the evening, both in the first half as they were stalled in the closing period.

In the 9th minute of play, Sam Flello picked up a loose ball in the middle of the field as he drove towards the net. His chip shot would force a diving save as the keeper of Mount Mercy would be forced to make a play on the ball. This would prove to be the best early scoring chance for the Bees.

Until, Mount Mercy scored the opening goal after a St. Ambrose foul in the 18 yard box to draw a penalty kick in the 12th minute of play. Kai Domagala was to face the kick but Mount Mercy lined it up perfectly to make the score 1-0. Before this goal, the Mustangs had little momentum in the match early.

Shortly after the goal, the Mustangs would get two more quick shots off on the Bees before the Bees would power back with a score of their own. St. Ambrose would power up the field to earn a corner kick, taken by Jörn Reck. After a scramble in the box, Sam Flello would tap the loose ball in for his first goal of the season to tie the match at one all.

St. Ambrose would then fight off corner kick after corner kick while the Bees were on their heels. Domagala and the Bees defense held strong until the 33rd minute of play when the Mustangs found the breakthrough. This score would be the eventual game-winner for Mount Mercy.

As the Bees were unable to find any extra scoring chances towards the end of the period, the Bees would go into the locker room down 2-1 at halftime.

To start the final period of play, Owen Gannaway would fire off a shot early that would hang wide. This would be St. Ambrose's single shot of the period. Other than that, the Mustangs would keep much of the possession throughout the remainder of the match.

The defense of St. Ambrose would lock in and not allow another Mustang score the entire second half. With the bees unable to find offensive pressure of their own, the match would end 2-1 as Mount Mercy would gather another win.

Flello gave the Bees the best two scoring chances of the match in the first period with both his shots on net. The second resulting in a score.

Gannaway picked up a shot for St. Ambrose to total three for the match for SAU.

Domagala faced six shots to wrap up with four saves.

St. Ambrose will take a break before their next match at Bethel (IN). Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. CST on Thurs., Sep. 19th.
