
SAU beats Missouri Valley 19-1
Wednesday in Davenport, Iowa, the Bees battled Missouri Valley College in a home conference game. St. Ambrose grabbed the early lead and never looked back, winning the game 19-1.
SAU came into this match winning four straight conference games, and looked to keep things rolling in this home matchup against the Vikings. The Bees came out hot scoring in the first 30 seconds with Ayden Fraelle finding Eli Hahn wide open on crease for the opening goal. SAU followed this up with Lachlan Hodge taking a step down shot for a goal. The Vikings, on a fastbreak opportunity, shot and found the back of the net to bring the score 2-1. In the final five minutes of the quarter, the Bees found energy with Anthony Lyons dodging past his defender and shooting the ball into the bottom corner for a goal. The Bees scored again as Cameron Washington dodged from X and found Ryan Swanson open on the wing for a step down shot, going low to high for the goal. SAU continued their run with Hodge dodging down the alley for a shot on the run. This goal put the Bees up 5-1 to end the first quarter.
Picking up where they left off, St. Ambrose scored off the first faceoff win with Swanson feeding Fraelle for an open shot and goal. The Bees continued their run and scored six more unanswered goals. Zakary Brown got his first of the night with a shot on the run to bounce it past the goalie. Swanson then got his second with another Washinginton feed for an assist. On a fastbreak opportunity, Hahn struck the bottom corner thanks to Jagger Shaddix throwing the assist. Lyons found the back of the net again off a dodge and shot down the alley. Shaddix found himself a goal as he swept over the top and shot it low. Final goal came from Hahn causing a turnover, running down the field and finding Fraelle open for his third goal. The Vikings, unable to find an answer, went scoreless in the quarter which ended the first half 12-1 in favor of the Bees.
To try and stop the Bees, Missouri Valley started the second half with a zone defense. With the zone holding the Bees scoreless for the first seven minutes, SAU found an answer with Hodge placing the ball underneath the crossbar for a goal off of a Fraelle pass. Three minutes later, Hahn scored from Hodge assisting on a fast break. To follow it up, Lucas Mytych pushed transition and found Fraelle open for his third goal of the night. Shortly after, Swanson scored from a Fraelle assist. With 52 seconds left, Washington found Shaddix open on the wing, and Shaddix stung the top left corner for a goal. To beat the clock, Brown scored with two seconds on the clock with Swanson picking up the assist. This six-goal run put the Bees up 18-1 to finish the third.
In a slow fourth quarter, both teams battled back and forth until Brown scored the lone goal of the quarter off of a Swanson pass from X. This goal closed the game 19-1 in favor of St. Ambrose.
In this high-scoring match for SAU, five different Bees notched in three goals; Hodge, Brown, Fraelle, Swanson, and Hahn. Shaddix and Lyons got on the board with two each. Distributing the ball, Swanson, Fraelle, and Washington each converted on three assists while Shaddix, Mytych, and Hahn each got one.
Alex Wirth led the way for defense making six saves on the night. Cleveland Lemus took the load at faceoffs going 15-20. The Bees caused a total of 14 turnovers on the night with Hahn leading with five while Mytych and Joe Campbell each causing two. Hodge, Aidan Fergus, Swanson, Wirth, and Dominic Della Vedova each caused one.
This 19-1 victory makes the Bees 6-1 in conference play, and moved them to #2 in conference standings. Now on a five-game win streak, SAU will host conference matchup Midland University on Saturday for their Senior Day.
