SAU controls Clarke in 20-4 victory

Wednesday night, the Bees traveled to Dubuque, Iowa, to take on Clarke University. St. Ambrose, coming off a dominant conference win in Kansas, looked to keep things rolling and succeeded, beating Clarke in a commanding 20-4 win.

St. Ambrose came into this match with momentum coming off two conference wins. SAU opened up the game with Cameron Washington scoring early. Jagger Shaddix followed this up with a dodge down the alley, putting the ball low and away for a goal. Up 2-0, Zakary Brown split two defenders and scored on crease to put the Bees up 3-0. The Pride aimed to make a comeback scoring two unanswered goals, which made it a one-goal game at 3-2. Late in the first the Bees striked again with Ryan Swanson notching in a goal. With two seconds left in the quarter, Lachlan Hodge found a way to get another goal for the Bees. SAU ended the quarter up 5-2.

It was all Bees in the second quarter with seven unanswered goals. The Bees started the quarter hot with Swanson finding Eli Hahn open to score on a fast break goal. St. Ambrose followed this up with two quick goals with the first coming from Swanson off of a Washington dodge and feed from X, and Hahn scoring again on an outside shot. A little over halfway through the quarter, the Bees put in three goals in less than two minutes with goals coming from Sahddix, Hodge, and Swanson. The Bees final goal came from a man up play where Swanson found Washington wide open on crease. That final goal put the Bees up 12-2 to end the first half.

In a slow third quarter, Clarke notched a goal within the first minute. St. Ambrose followed this up three minutes later with Hodge finding Ayden Fraelle open for an outside shot where he put it bottom corner for a goal. With great goalie play from Isaac Martinez, and Clarke inserting a zone defense, neither team found the back of the net for the remainder of the quarter. Highlighting the defensive side in the third, Martinez had four saves for St. Ambrose. The third quarter ended in a 13-3 lead for the Bees.

SAU found its momentum again starting the final quarter, and broke the zone with a six-goal run. Fraelle found the back of the net three times on this run while Swanson, Washington, and Brown each notched one with assists coming from Shaddix, Hodge, and Joey Curzon. Clarke scored with four minutes left to bring the Bees lead 19-4. In the final two minutes of play, Swanson fed Fraelle up top for a stinging top right dagger. St. Ambrose ended this contest with a 20-4 commanding victory.

With a ferocious offensive play, Fraelle led the Bees with five goals while Swanson tallied four and added on three assists. More goals came from Washington with three while Hodge, Brown, Shaddix, and Hahn each notched in two. St. Ambrose was distributing the rock totaling 10 assists on the day; Washington with three, Hodge added two, with Shaddix and Curzon each dishing one.

The Bees were dominant on defense with only four goals allowed. Martinez played the first 50 minutes making 10 stops, and Alex Wirth finished the game grabbing two saves. Multiple defenders caused turnovers that led to a great defensive game; Hahn with four, Joe Campbell getting two, Aidan Fergus causing two, and Curzon getting one.

With this win, St. Ambrose is now on a three-game win streak and moves to 4-1 in conference play. SAU plays home this Saturday at St. Vincent Athletic Complex where they will be tested against Benedictine College, another 4-1 conference team.
