St. Ambrose gets another big conference win on the road

Saturday afternoon, the Bees traveled to Ottawa, Kan., to take on Ottawa University. St. Ambrose carried over the momentum from the last game and dominated with a 27-2 win.

The Bees came out hot and ready to play in this conference matchup. SAU scored first within the first minute of the game with Eli Hahn finding Ayden Fraelle open on the crease for a goal. Fraelle followed this up with another goal on an outside shot. Zakary Brown found the next goal for the Bees dodging past his defender and scoring. The Bees kept the momentum going and scored four more goals in the quarter with goals coming from Cameron Washington (assisted by Brown) and Ryan Swanson with three (EJ Loggins assisted on one). With that seven-goal run and Alex Wirth's presence in the cage with a save, the Bees held Ottawa to zero goals and finished the quarter up 7-0.

St. Ambrose kept the run rolling with four more goals to open the second, with Washington, Fraelle twice, and Jagger Shaddix finding the back of the net. Ottawa put an end to the 11-goal run by scoring on a dodge across the middle, which made the score 11-1. St. Ambrose found its groove again late in the second with Shaddix scoring on a dodge down the right alley. Following, Brown had two goals to end the quarter with assists coming from Lachlan Hodge and Washington. The Bees head into halftime with a commanding 14-1 lead. 

SAU continued its dominant play in the third quarter opening up with a five-goal run. Brown opened up the half with a goal coming from Hahn feeding. Off the faceoff win, Jack Wiltrout took it himself to earn his first career goal. SAU followed this up with three more unanswered goals with Brown, Hodge getting his first of the day, and Joey Curzon getting his first goal of the season. Ottawa with a glimpse of energy found the back of the net with seven minutes left making it 19-2. There wasn't another goal until Swanson scored with eight seconds left. 

The fourth quarter was all up for the Bees with seven unanswered goals. Fraelle notched in two early with a feed coming from Washington on one. Fraelle then found Ethan Nydegger open on crease for his first career goal. The last four goals for the Bees came from Shaddix, Hodge, Nydegger, and Isaac Martinez scoring his first goal. Shutting out the Braves in the fourth quarter, the Bees won this game 27-2.

With a plethora of goals, Fraelle led the way for the Bees with six goals and two assists. Multiple goal scorers on the day with goals coming from Brown with five, Swanson with four, Shaddix getting three, Hodge finding two, Washington and Nydegger each with two, and Martinze, Wiltrout, and Curzon each notching one in. The Bees were sharing the ball totaling 16 assists on the day. Washington had his head up assisting on five of the goals; while Swanson had three, Fraelle and Hahn getting two, and even the goalie Wirth got one.

The defense played a great 60 minutes only allowing in two goals. Wirth was the leader in the cage making two saves on their four shots. Multiple defenders causing turnovers led to a great defensive game; Aidan Fergus with three, while Dominic Della Vedova, Joe Campbell and Eli Hahn each caused one. Wiltrout was the main bee at the faceoff x winning 19 faceoffs. 

After this dominant win, St. Ambrose is now 3-6 on the year, and has moved to 3-1 in conference play. The Bees, after winning their last two games, will look to keep momentum as they travel to Dubuque, Iowa, on Wednesday where they will battle against Clarke University in another conference matchup.
