
Bees fall short despite a third-quarter comeback
Saturday afternoon, at neutral site Romeoville, Ill., St. Ambrose fell short to No. 8 Aquinas with a 14-4 loss despite their third-quarter efforts to get back in the game.
The Bees came out slow going down 5-0 to in the first quarter. Isaac Martinez was able to keep the scoring low with his eight saves in the first.
St. Ambrose, still looking for their groove, gave up four more goals in the second quarter. Not able to capitalize in the second quarter, the Bees go into half down 9-0. Despite not scoring, SAU's Martinez had an impressive 12 saves in the first half. Additionally, Jack Wiltrout went 5-for-5 on faceoffs in the second quarter.
SAU came into the second half with some urgency, striking first. Ryan Swanson put one in the back of the net to get the bees on the board. Zakary Brown followed this up with another goal for the Bees assisted by Anthony Lyons. With some momentum on the Bees side, Lyons took it himself netting one in. With a minute and a half left, SAU scored another goal coming from Ayden Fraelle with the assist coming from Eli Hahn. This four-goal run put the bees down 9-4 ending the third quarter.
St. Ambrose lost its momentum coming into the fourth quarter while Aquinas scored five in a row. SAU was not able to find the back of the net for the remainder of the game ending the game 14-4.
The Bees battled hard with an impressive outing from Martinez in the cage making 18 saves. Wiltrout battled at the faceoffs, winning nine, and adding four ground balls. Ambrose had four different goal scorers with Swanson, Brown, Lyons, and Fraelle all notching one in. Aidan Fergus led the defensive side with two caused turnovers.
The Bees will look to bounce back with their first conference game this Wednesday, March 19, on their home turf against William Woods.
