Six Bees score in loss to Michigan-Dearborn
The Bees saw tough competition in their opening weekend of the 2025 campaign as they lost to the University of Michigan-Dearborn yesterday afternoon with a 11-7 loss at St. Vincent's Athletic Complex. Six Bees scored seven goals in the loss for SAU. Freshman Ryan Swanson came away with two goals for the Bees. Lucas Mytych, Zakary Brown, Ayden Fraelle, Cameron Washington, and Eli Hahn each netted a goal for the Bees. This leaves SAU still in search for their first win of the 2025 season.
The Wolverines had a huge six-score third quarter which extended their lead to 8-4 on the Bees. Michigan-Dearborn scored five unanswered goals to put the Bees away after both squads were tied before the halftime break.
Both sides were slow to add themselves to the scoring column as the Wolverines scored at the 2:42 mark in the opening quarter. St. Ambrose did not find the back of the net in the opening 15 minutes.
It was Michigan-Dearborn right out of the gate in the second period as they scored on their first offensive possession to take the 2-0 lead. Then, St. Ambrose let six shots fly on their opening possession, but could never find the breakthrough goal to start building momentum.
At the 5:35 mark of the second period, Lachlan Hodge found Hahn on a long pass to break the Wolverines pressure. Hahn scored on an open net to cut the lead in half.
St. Ambrose surged back with offensive pressure of their own over the next five minutes as they locked down the Wolverines defensively. Finally, Fraelle netted a solo goal right after a SAU timeout to tie the contest at two all just before the halftime horn.
The Bees failed to stop the Wolverines in the third period as Michigan-Dearborn scored six times throughout the 15 minutes of play, five of the six goals went unanswered. SAU was only able to score twice as Swanson scored his first goal of the contest and Mytych netted a goal with just under 30 seconds left on the clock.
SAU scored the final three goals of the game within a minute and a half offensive run, but it was too late as the Wolverines already netted three scores before St. Ambrose did in the final period of play. Brown, Swanson, and Washington accounted for the final three goals in the loss.
With the 11-7 final decision, the Bees drop to 0-2 early in the season. St. Ambrose was successful on 15-21 clear attempts, but struggled to win face offs as they only managed eight face off wins.
Hodge and Washington each collected an assist.
Jagger Shaddix led the Bees with six groundballs. Joe Campbell and Hahn added in three and four pickups, respectively.
Adam Kraft earned three caused turnovers to his resume for the Bees.
Freshman Alex Wirth played 45 minutes in the cage for the Bees and grabbed 13 saves. Isaac Martinez played the final 15 minutes and earned two saves.
The Bees look to get into the win column this week as they travel to Indiana Tech in Fort Wayne, Ind. The contest is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. CST on Thursday.
