Bees can't keep pace with RedHawks in second half
It was a first half to remember and a second half to forget for St. Ambrose. The Bees shot nearly 58 percent from the floor in the first half but hit just 36 percent in the second half of a 92-73 loss at Indiana Northwest Saturday.
The Bees were 19-of-33 from the field in building a 45-41 halftime lead. SAU was 5-of-11 from 3-point range, good for 45.5 percent.
But the second half was a different story.
IU Northwest (20-6, 14-4 CCAC) also shot nearly 58 percent of its shots in the first half, but the RedHawks continued their torrid pace, shooting at a 57.6-percent clip in the second half.
St. Ambrose (14-11, 7-11 CCAC) couldn't keep up. The Bees were just 12-of-33 from the floor, which included a 1-of-9 mark from beyond the arc, in the second half.
SAU came out strong after the halftime break, holding a 53-50 lead after a Will Spriggs layup with 15:36 to play. SAU would only score 20 points the rest of the way.
Indiana Northwest led just 61-59 before breaking things open. A 13-0 run built a 74-59 advantage in the middle stages of the half. An Ignacio Dacunda layup stopped the spurt but SAU trailed by double digits the rest of the way.
The RedHawks ultimately outscored the Bees 51-28 in the second half to pull away.
Thanks to the strong first half, St. Ambrose still shot 47 percent for the game. IU Northwest shot nearly 58 percent from the floor in the win. The Bees were also outscored 16-5 from the line.
Spriggs led SAU with 16 points. Dacunda and Guillermo Narbona each netted 15 points. Dacunda added nine rebounds and four assists in the loss.
Atem Agot scored eight points. Grant Mason and Collin Wainscott each dropped in seven. Ryan Kenney (three points) and Nikos Gerokostas (two) also scored.
The loss dropped St. Ambrose into sole possession of eighth place in the conference. SAU maintains a one-game lead on both Holy Cross (9-16, 6-12 CCAC) and Viterbo (8-17, 6-12 CCAC) for the final spot in the CCAC Tournament.
The Bees have just two regular-season games remaining. They will host Saint Xavier Wednesday before hosting Trinity Christian on Senior Day Saturday.
