SAU unable to stop skid at CCSJ

Shooting just slightly better than 35 percent from the floor, St. Ambrose saw its losing streak reach four games with a 72-59 loss at Calumet St. Joseph Wednesday night.

The Bees connected on 23-of-65 attempts from the field to shoot at 35.4 percent while the Crimson Wave (28-of-57) made five more shots in eight fewer attempts to finish at 49.1 percent for the game.

St. Ambrose (12-8, 5-8 CCAC) trailed just 40-36 at the half and got within a single point twice in the opening minutes of the second half. First, a layup from Will Spriggs and an Ignacio Dacunda free throw cut the deficit to 40-39. Then, following a Calumet (11-9, 6-7 CCAC) basket, Spriggs knocked down another jumper to put the margin at 42-41 with 16:25 to play.

Then the Bees went cold from the field, missing 12 consecutive field goal attempts, to allow the Wave to pull away. Spriggs ended the nearly eight-minute drought with a layup, but by then CCSJ had established a 52-43 advantage.

SAU got as close as seven at 55-48 on a Grant Mason layup with six minutes left, but Calumet scored the next six points. St. Ambrose never got closer than eight points the rest of the way.

The second half was especially rough for the Bees. SAU was just 9-of-31 from the floor (29 percent) and connected on just 1-of-11 tries from 3-point range.

Mason led the way with 15 points. Spriggs finished with 14 and Dacunda came off the bench to add 12 points and nine rebounds.

Atem Agot totaled six points, eight boards, five assists and a pair of steals. Collin Wainscott also threw in six points. Guillermo Narbona scored four while Kieran Farrell added two.

St. Ambrose will look to snap its losting streak when the Bees host Judson Saturday afternoon.
