Bees unable to keep pace with hot-shooting Titans
Indiana South Bend shot better than 62 percent from the floor in handing St. Ambrose a 91-73 loss Saturday afternoon in South Bend, Ind.
After shooting at a 57.1-percent clip in the opening half, the Titans upped that mark to 68 percent in the second half, connecting on 17-of-25 shots from the field over the final 20 minutes.
Despite that, St. Ambrose (11-4, 4-4 CCAC) was within 51-48 on a Guillermo Narbona layup four minutes into the second half. IU South Bend (8-8, 5-3 CCAC) answered by hitting five straight shots from the floor, including three 3-pointers, during a 13-2 run that built a 64-50 lead with 13 minutes to play.
Minutes later, the Bees bounced back with a run of their own. With the team down 66-54, Collin Wainscott drained a three. Ignacio Dacunda scored inside, and taking advantage of a rare IUSB dry spell, Wainscott buried another triple and then hit two free throws to cut the deficit to 66-64 with just under nine minutes left.
But over the next five minutes, SAU missed 7-of-8 shots and committed three turnovers, allowing South Bend to go on an 11-2 run. Will Spriggs hit a 3-pointer to stop the spurt and get the Bees to within 77-69.
However, the Titans caught fire again, hitting six of their final seven shots to pull away for the 18-point victory.
St. Ambrose attempted eight more field goals than Indiana South Bend (61-53), but the Titans made 33 shots compared to just 29 for the Bees. IUSB also hit 14-of-24 from beyond the arc (58.3 percent) while SAU shot just 9-of-24 from deep (37.5 percent).
Atem Agot led four Bees in double figures with 20 points. He was 9-of-13 from the field. Narbona connected on 8-of-10 shots in scoring 18 points. He also pulled down nine rebounds.
Wainscott came off the bench to hit three 3-pointers and score 16 points. Spriggs finished with 13 points. Dacunda and Grant Mason each scored three.
Spriggs recorded a team-best five assists.
SAU will visit Trinity Christian Wednesday.
