Dacunda's double-double lifts St. Ambrose past Viterbo
Ignacio Dacunda came off the bench to finish with a season-high 13 points and a career-best 17 rebounds to lead St. Ambrose to a 61-55 win over Viterbo Wednesday night inside Lee Lohman Arena.
The junior collected a double-double in the first half alone, totaling 11 points and 10 boards to help SAU to a 27-25 halftime lead.
His play helped the Bees overcome a shaky start as Viterbo (3-11, 1-6 CCAC) built a 9-2 lead four minutes into the contest. Dacunda entered the game with St. Ambrose (11-3, 4-3 CCAC) trailing 9-4. He scored the team's next seven points, capped by a 3-pointer, to tie the game at 11-11.
But with the Bees trailing 21-15 with eight minutes left in the half, it was a 10-0 run that ended up proving to be the difference.
Collin Wainscott knocked down a 3-pointer to start the spurt. Atem Agot sandwiched two layups around a Dacunda jumper before Agot finished the run with a free throw. That gave SAU a 25-21 lead, an advantage the Bees would never relinquish, and the team took the narrow two-point lead into the break.
Dacunda started the second-half scoring with a layup before Will Spriggs buried a three. Guillermo Narbona scored inside, and following a V-Hawk basket, Spriggs hit another triple to extend the St. Ambrose lead to 37-27. Austin Born hit a jumper and Agot drilled a 3-pointer to give the Bees their largest lead of the game at 42-29 with just under 13 minutes remaining.
Viterbo got within three at 50-47 but Spriggs immediately answered with a three-ball. The V-Hawks made a final push to trail only 57-53 with 1:44 to go. But on the next SAU possession, Grant Mason tracked down two huge offensive rebounds, ultimately leading to a pair of Spriggs free throws which restored a 59-53 lead with 21 seconds to play. Viterbo again closed to within 59-55 before two Wainscott free throws with eight seconds on the clock sealed the victory.
St. Ambrose limited Viterbo to a 23-of-64 mark from the floor in the win.
Spriggs led the Bees with 15 points and four steals. Thirteen of his points came in the second half.
Agot finished with 11 points and Wainscott dropped in 10 to give SAU four players in double figures.
But the story of the night was Dacunda, who surpassed his previous career-high of 16 rebounds set last February at Saint Xavier. His 17 boards accounted for nearly half of the team's 35 total rebounds. He also added two assists and three steals in his 33 minutes of action. It marked Dacunda's third game with at least 10 rebounds and was his second double-double of the season.
Born finished with six points off the bench. Narbona, Mason and Kieran Farrell each scored two. Mason added five rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block. Solomon Garrison handed out two assists.
St. Ambrose will hit the road to play at Indiana South Bend Saturday.
