Late free throws get GSU past SAU
Governors State was a perfect 6-for-6 from the line over the final 55 seconds to escape with an 83-79 win over St. Ambrose Saturday afternoon in University Park, Ill.
The first two of those free throws, which broke a 77-77 tie, came after the Bees were whistled for a technical foul for calling a timeout they did not have. After a scramble along the baseline, Guillermo Narbona picked up a loose ball and play was stopped with 55 seconds remaining as SAU was charged with a timeout. But the Bees had already exhausted all of their timeouts leading to the technical.
Governors State (7-7, 3-3 CCAC) hit both free throws. On the ensuing possession, with the shot clock running out, Will Spriggs's jumper rimmed out. The Jaguars controlled the rebound which led to two more free throws and an 81-77 lead.
Grant Mason converted a difficult layup to get St. Ambrose back to within two points with 15 seconds left. But GSU made two more free throws which ended the scoring as late 3-pointers from Spriggs and Narbona were off the mark.
The Bees trailed nearly the entire way. After falling behind by as many as eight points, St. Ambrose (10-3, 3-3 CCAC) ultimately pulled even at 77-77 behind a pair of free throws from both Kieran Farrell and Spriggs inside the final two minutes. SAU got the ball back with a shot at the lead before the late GSU free throws.
Both teams shot well from the floor. St. Ambrose shot at a nearly 47-percent clip while Governors State was at almost 54 percent. A major difference came from beyond the arc as the Jaguars (9-of-16) outscored the Bees (3-of-13) by 18 points from 3-point range.
Spriggs led all scorers with 24 points. Atem Agot finished with 18 points and seven rebounds. Narbona posted a double-double of 12 points and 11 boards. Mason also reached double figures, scoring 11.
Farrell and Ignacio Dacunda each netted five points. Collin Wainscott and Austin Born each threw in two points.
SAU returns home to host Viterbo Wednesday.
