Big second half from Spriggs powers Bees past Crimson Wave

Will Spriggs scored 19 of his game-high 27 points in the second half to lead St. Ambrose to an 85-77 win over Calumet Monday night in Lee Lohman Arena.

The Bees, who led by as many as 11 points in the first half, took a 41-33 lead into the halftime break. But after committing four total turnovers over the game's first 20 minutes, the Bees committed three on their first three possessions of the second half. That allowed Calumet (5-4, 1-3 CCAC) to climb back into the game.

The Crimson Wave ultimately outscored the Bees 28-14 over the first 11 minutes of the second half to build a 61-55 lead.

Then Spriggs took over.

The fifth-year senior scored the next 10 St. Ambrose points. The last six of his points came on a 3-pointer and then a three-point play that tied the game at 65-65.

Collin Wainscott ended the Spriggs run by converting a pair of acrobatic layups to give SAU a 69-65 lead.

The Bee run continued. Grant Mason scored inside. Spriggs knocked down a jumper. Then Ignacio Dacunda hit two free throws to cap a 13-0 run that turned a 65-62 deficit into a 76-65 advantage with under three minutes remaining.

St. Ambrose (7-2, 2-2 CCAC) made 6-of-8 from the line over the final 2:06 to seal the victory.

Spriggs shot 6-of-8 from the floor, hit 1-of-2 from beyond the arc, and connected on 6-of-7 from the line to account for his 19 second-half points. He finished 10-of-16 from the field in netting his 27.

His shooting helped St. Ambrose shoot better than 54 percent overall as the Bees were 32-of-59, good for a 54.2-percent mark. Calumet shot less than 35 percent for the game but were able to stay close thanks to a 25-14 edge in points from the line.

Mason finished with 17 points and Wainscott came off the bench to drop in 13 in the win.

Atem Agot had nine points and six rebounds. Dacunda scored seven and Austin Born added six. Kieran Farrell (three points), Solomon Garrison (two) and Guillermo Narbona (one) rounded out the SAU scoring.

Narbona pulled down a team-best 11 rebounds. Spriggs and Dacunda were each credited with four assists.

The Bees will take a break from conference play and visit Missouri Baptist Wednesday.
