Four in double figures as Bees sting Spartans
Four players scored in double figures as St. Ambrose picked up an 82-75 win over Missouri Baptist Tuesday afternoon in Lee Lohman Arena.
The Bees overcame a 12-point first-half deficit to move to 6-1 on the year while defeating a team that beat them twice a season ago.
SAU came up with big plays down the stretch, outscoring MBU 9-3 over the final 2:55. Nursing a 73-72 lead late, Will Spriggs got free for a layup. After a defensive stop, Atem Agot tracked down an offensive rebound and was fouled, leading to two free throws and a 77-72 lead.
Missouri Baptist (2-5) knocked down a 3-pointer to get within two, but the Spartans would score no more.
Spriggs would again score inside and after an MBU miss, Agot split two free throws for an 80-75 lead with 17 seconds left. One final defensive stand led to two Spriggs free throws that wrapped up the scoring.
The win came after a slow start. The Bees found themselves down 30-18 midway through the opening half. Agot had six points and Grant Mason four to spark a 14-2 spurt that knotted the score at 32-32. Kieran Farrell capped the half with a 3-pointer that gave St. Ambrose a 39-36 lead at the break.
SAU maintained a lead for much of the second half.
Spriggs and Guillermo Narbona led the Bees with 16 points apiece. Agot finished with 15 points and Farrell had 10.
Three other Bees narrowly missed double figures. Mason and Collin Wainscott each scored eight points and Ignacio Dacunda ended with seven. Alec Platipodis netted two points.
Narbona grabbed a team-best nine rebounds. Agot and Spriggs had six each. Spriggs led the team with four assists.
St. Ambrose will play an exhibition game at Western Illinois on Dec. 4 before returning to CCAC action by hosting Holy Cross on Dec. 7.
