Season ends with CCAC Tournament semifinal loss at No. 15 Viterbo

St. Ambrose saw its season come to a close following a 25-12, 25-19, 25-20 loss at No. 15 Viterbo in the semifinal round of the CCAC Tournament Thursday night.

The V-Hawks hit .242 in advancing to Saturday's conference championship match while the Bees hit just .061. The major difference came in the opening set. Viterbo (23-9) had 11 kills and two errors for a .360 percentage while SAU had 10 kills and eight errors for an .062 mark.

The Bees' best chance came in the third set. Thanks to kills from Mackenzie Grafton, Kenia Diaz Vega and Trenyce Bonner, St. Ambrose raced to a fast 5-1 lead.

The margin grew to as many as five points at 8-3 on a block from Kylie Brosius and Grace Beitzel. SAU maintained a two-point lead as late as 11-9 on another Grafton kill. But Viterbo responded with a four-point run to go in front 13-11. The deficit was just 19-18 late before another 4-0 spurt helped the V-Hawks pull away.

Grafton and Bonner led the Bees with 12 kills apiece. Beitzel finished with four and Brosius had two.

Ines Marques (15) and Haley Doucet (10) both collected double-digit digs. Diaz Vega recorded 19 digs. Alexa Orozco had seven.

St. Ambrose finished the year with a 16-16 record, and ended fourth in the CCAC with a 9-6 league mark.
