St. Ambrose gets win at Missouri Baptist Classic

After more than a week off, St. Ambrose returned to action by getting a victory at the Missouri Baptist Classic in St. Louis, Mo., Friday and Saturday.

In their second match of the day Friday, the Bees battled back from a slow start to take down Faulkner 16-25, 25-18, 25-17, 25-15. SAU had seven hitting errors in the opening set. Over the final three sets combined, the Bees totaled just 10 hitting errors. St. Ambrose hit at a .407 clip (47 kills, 10 errors) over the last three sets.

Mackenzie Grafton had a big night, putting down 20 kills against just four errors. Alexa Orozco (14) and Grace Beitzel (11) also reached double-digit kills. Kylie Brosius put down six, Trenyce Bonner had four and Kennedy Hugunin added two to go along with four blocks.

SAU's serving also contributed to the win. Devyn Church had seven aces and Ines Marques had five. Kenia Diaz Vega and Grafton each had one as the Bees finished with 14 aces as a team.

Haley Doucet was credited with a team-high 26 assists. Marques collected 15. Diaz Vega paced the team with 15 digs. Doucet picked up eight.

Earlier Friday, St. Ambrose fell to Lindsey Wilson 26-24, 25-22, 25-19.

A five-point run, keyed by kills from Beitzel and Orozco and a block from Beitzel and Ella Gatz, gave the Bees a 20-16 lead late in the first. But Lindsey Wilson followed with seven straight points to build a 22-20 advantage. Kills from Orozco and Beitzel knotted the score at 22-22. An ace from Doucet had things even at 24-24 before the Blue Raiders claimed the final two points. LWC carried that momentum through the next two sets to defeat SAU.

Grafton and Beitzel each finished with 10 kills. Orozco (three) and Adriana Diaz (two) were the only other Bees to produce multiple kills.

Marques recorded 18 assists and Doucet finished with nine. Diaz Vega registered 20 digs and Grafton added 11. Marques had seven and Kaleigh Bergschneider picked up five. Marques, Grafton and Diaz each had three aces and Diaz Vega added a pair.

The weekend ended with a 25-14, 25-19, 25-16 loss to host Missouri Baptist.

Beitzel had a team-high 10 kills. Grafton and Bonner had six apiece and Orozco put down three. Marques (14) and Doucet (11) combined for all 25 assists. Diaz Vega collected eight digs and Grafton finished with seven.

The Bees, now 9-14 overall, will return to CCAC action with a pair of road matches next week. St. Ambrose will visit Calumet Tuesday before taking on Trinity Christian Thursday.
