St. Ambrose picks up second straight CCAC victory

Big nights from Mackenzie Grafton and Alexa Orozco helped St. Ambrose take down Governors State 25-20, 25-16, 25-16 Tuesday night in Lee Lohman Arena.

The victory, SAU's second straight conference win, moved the Bees to 7-10 overall and 2-3 in the CCAC.

Grafton finished with 16 kills and two hitting errors while Orozco tallied nine kills and one error. They were supported by Grace Beitzel who collected seven kills against just a pair of attack errors.

St. Ambrose picked up its play as the match progressed. Governors State (4-8, 0-4 CCAC) had seven kills and seven errors in the opening set to help SAU's cause.

A five-point run, aided by two Beitzel kills and another from Ella Gatz, helped the Bees open a 19-10 lead in the first set. The Jaguars responded by winning six of the next seven points to claw to within 20-16. The margin closed to 23-20 before GSU serving and hitting errors closed the set.

After totaling 11 kills and five errors in the opener, St. Ambrose registered a combined 31 kills and eight errors over the final two sets.

The second set was tied as late as 10-10 before the Bees pulled away. Back-to-back Grafton kills started the spurt. Ines Marques and Grafton each had an ace to extend the lead to 16-12. Holding a 21-16 lead, SAU used another kill from Grafton and a Kenia Diaz Vega ace to close the set with four straight points to go up 2-0.

The final set featured a similar script. Things were close early as Governors State trailed just 12-10 before St. Ambrose took control. Sofia Pabon Velazquez had a kill that started a 3-0 run that built a 15-10 advantage. Up 17-12, two kills from Orozco and a kill and an ace from Grafton came part of a five-point run that pushed the lead to 22-12. Kills from Beitzel and Pabon Velazquez later wrapped up the win.

Pabon Velazquez and Kennedy Hugunin each finished with four kills. Gatz and Kat Rivera each added one.

Haley Doucet had a team-leading 17 assists while Marques was credited with 14 to go along with 10 digs. Diaz Vega picked up a match-best 16 digs.

Grafton recorded five of the team's 10 aces. Diaz Vega and Marques had two apiece with Kaleigh Bergschneider getting one.

St. Ambrose will hit the road to visit Indiana Northwest Thursday.
