Grafton named to all-tourney team as SAU returns to winning ways
St. Ambrose took advantage of a late scheduling change by winning a pair of matches at a tournament hosted by Clarke in Dubuque, Iowa, Friday night.
The Bees were added to the field just days earlier after a team was forced to withdraw. SAU defeated Haskell 25-13, 25-15, 25-22 and York 25-19, 25-23, 23-25, 25-23.
St. Ambrose had little trouble dispatching Haskell in three sets. The Bees finished with 45 kills against just 10 hitting errors to hit at a .324 clip. SAU collected at least 14 kills in each of the three sets and finished with no more than four attack errors in any set.
Mackenzie Grafton led the way. She put down a match-best 16 kills with just one error to hit .455. That helped her earn all-tournament honors.
Contributions came up and down the roster.
Alexa Orozco had nine kills and Emily Hickerson finished with five. Sofia Pabon Velazquez and Kennedy Hugunin each added four. C.J. Starke recorded three and Carrianne Hungate had two. Trenyce Bonner and Kenia Diaz Vega picked up one kill apiece.
Ines Marques led all players with 24 assists while Haley Doucet handed out 15. Grafton paced the team with 18 digs and Diaz Vega reached double figures with 13. Toni Maloy finished with six kills, Orozco had five, and Doucet and Kaleigh Bergschneider each added four.
SAU then outlasted York in four competitive sets. The final three sets were each decided by just two points.
Up 1-0, the Bees won three of the final four points to claim the second set. Grafton picked up two kills and Starke and Hugunin combined for a block on set point to give St. Ambrose a two-set advantage.
The Bees nearly had the sweep as Kylie Brosius and Ella Gatz teamed for a block that knotted the third set at 22-22. But SAU would win just one more point in the third, that coming on a York serving error, as the Panthers were able to extend the match.
St. Ambrose rallied late in the fourth to claim victory. Trailing 23-22, Pabon Velazquez had a kill to tie the score and then paired with Hickerson for a block to give the Bees a match point. A York attack error closed out the match.
Grafton had another big match, finishing with 21 kills. Orozco had 16 and Bonner just missed double figures, finishing with nine. Gatz totaled eight kills while Hugunin, Starke, Pabon Velazquez and Bergschneider added two apiece.
Marques (30) and Doucet (20) combined for 50 assists in the win. Diaz Vega led the team with 29 digs. Orozco had 18, Grafton 15 and Doucet 10. Hugunin and Gatz were each credited with four blocks.
St. Ambrose, which snapped a four-match losing streak to move to 4-6 on the season, will play at home for the first time this season next Tuesday. The Bees will host Judson at 7 p.m. in the CCAC opener for both teams.
