Late rally lifts Bees past Wayland Baptist in five sets

St. Ambrose fought off a pair of match points before rallying for a 25-20, 25-13, 23-25, 20-25, 16-14 win over Wayland Baptist Saturday afternoon on the second day of the Park Invitational in Parkville, Mo.

After squandering a two-set lead, the Bees fell behind 14-12 after a three-point WBU run late in the fifth. A kill from Mackenzie Grafton erased the first match point and a kill from Alexa Orozco knotted the set at 14-14. Orozco followed with another kill to give SAU its first match point, and Trenyce Bonner put down a kill to cap a four-point run and close out the victory.

St. Ambrose was nearly able to close out the win in three sets. After winning the first two, the Bees led 21-19 in the third on a Haley Doucet ace. But three straight Wayland Baptist points erased the lead and ultimately extended the match.

Grafton led SAU with 20 kills in the win. Bonner finished with 11. Orozco totaled eight kills, Kylie Brosius had four and Doucet and Kennedy Hugunin added two apiece.

Doucet had a match-high 36 assists. Kenia Diaz Vega picked up 29 digs. Orozco came up with 15 and Grafton had 14 along with a team-best four aces.

The victory came after a pair of losses.

Grace Beitzel put down four, while Orozco, Hugunin and C.J. Starke added two each. Doucet registered 20 assists and Diaz Vega claimed 14 digs.
