Bees fall in home finale on Senior Night

On a night they recognized their two seniors, the Bees fell to conference power Trinity International in four sets Tuesday night.

The 25-19, 21-25, 25-18, 25-18 loss dropped St. Ambrose to 7-23 overall and 6-11 in the conference and ended the team's hopes of qualifying for the upcoming CCAC Tournament.

Those two seniors - Abby Happ and Brea Cunningham - made big contributions for the Bees Tuesday.

Down a set, SAU trailed 19-17 in the second. Jenny Koerner had four kills and Rachael Dion had an ace to spark a run. Cunningham had a kill for the team's sixth straight point and a 23-19 lead. A Trojan setting error gave the Bees a set point, and three points later, another Cunningham kill evened the match at one set apiece.

Trinity International (23-10, 13-4 CCAC) took over from there.

A Happ kill kept St. Ambrose within 13-11 in the third. But TIU followed with two straight points as part of a 5-1 run to regain the lead. It was another Happ kill that evened the fourth set at 15-15 before the Trojans ripped off a 7-1 spurt to effectively end the match.

Koerner led SAU with 14 kills. Happ and Jill Kavalauskas each finished with 12. Cunningham was credited with four kills as the Bees totaled 46 against the Trojans' 38.

Amber Tomlin led all players with 38 assists. Emma Marshall had a team-best 19 digs, while Happ and Tomlin each collected 18. Kavalauskas was credited with 11 and Alexis Hayes came up with nine.

The Bees will close the 2019 season at Olivet Nazarene Thursday night.
