Bees back to .500 in CCAC with win at Governors State

St. Ambrose evened its conference record at 4-4 following a four-set win at Governors State Thursday night.

The 25-21, 22-25, 25-14, 25-20 victory was the Bees' second win in a row following a brief four-match losing streak.

After splitting the first two sets, the Bees reasserted themselves early in the third. Three aces from Abby Happ and four kills from Jenny Koerner came as part of an eight-point run to push St. Ambrose in front 15-3. The Jaguars were unable to get closer than nine points the rest of the set.

Rachael Dion keyed a decisive spurt in the fourth set.

The sophomore middle hitter had two kills and combined with London Williams on a block as part of a four-point run that turned a 15-13 lead into a 19-13 advantage.

A Payton Wendt kill gave SAU a 23-15 lead and the Bees survived a late Governors State charge to close out the win.

Koerner led St. Ambrose with 16 kills. Happ had 13 and Dion had 12 giving SAU three players in double figures. Dion had just one hitting error, posted five aces and also was involved in six of the team's eight total blocks.

Brea Cunningham finished with seven kills and Wendt added five.

Amber Tomlin collected 36 assists and eight digs. Alexis Hayes paced the Bees with 17 digs. Maicee Pierce picked up 10, and Happ and Isabelle Todd each recorded nine.

SAU will play its third match in five days when the Bees visit Saint Xavier Saturday at 1 p.m.
