St. Ambrose unable to stay with Indiana South Bend

St. Ambrose was unable to stop a red-hot Indiana South Bend team as the Titans earned their seventh straight win by taking down the Bees in four sets Friday night in Lee Lohman Arena. The 25-19, 22-25, 25-23, 25-16 loss drops SAU to 3-12 overall and 2-4 in the CCAC.

SAU, which has now lost four straight conference matches after opening CCAC play 2-0, finally broke through in the second set. Abby Happ and Brea Cunningham had back-to-back kills to break a 19-19 tie in the second. Cunningham had another kill to push the lead to 22-20 before Jenny Koerner had a pair of kills over the final three points to even the match.

It marked just the third time this season St. Ambrose has won a second set.

The Bees built an 18-16 lead in the third. Amber Tomlin put down a kill to give SAU a 19-18 lead before Indiana South Bend (8-5, 5-1 CCAC) rallied with two straight points. Koerner had two more kills to help knot the set at 22-22 but that proved to be the Bees' final threat.

The Titans won two points in a row and three out of four to take the third.

A fast start in the fourth - kills from Rachael Dion, Jill Kavalauskas and Payton Wendt gave the Bees an early 4-1 lead - was followed by a 10-2 IUSB run. SAU never got closer than four points the rest of the way.

Koerner led the team with 15 kills. Cunningham and Happ each had eight and Dion finished with six.

Tomlin collected 36 assists, while Happ (17), Grace McGrath (14) and Maicee Pierce (13) all reached double digits in digs.

St. Ambrose will look to break its slide next Tuesday at home against Robert Morris.
