St. Ambrose unable to hold on after fast start

Looking to snap a two-match losing streak, St. Ambrose got off to the start it needed Tuesday night.

But after winning the opening set, the Bees couldn't keep the momentum in a 16-25, 25-17, 25-17, 25-12 loss to Olivet Nazarene inside Lee Lohman Arena.

SAU had 16 kills and just two hitting errors in taking the first set. Jenny Koerner (five kills) and Jessica Hemm (four) combined for nine kills without a single error. Brea Cunningham had three kills and Abby Happ had two to get the Bees a 1-0 lead.

The Bees got off to a strong start in the second set, taking a 10-7 lead on a Koerner kill. But things started to unravel there. Olivet Nazarene (5-8, 3-2 CCAC) won three straight points as part of a larger 8-1 run that gave the Tigers a 15-11 advantage. SAU would get no closer than three points the rest of the way.

St. Ambrose never rediscovered its spark.

ONU led the entire way in claiming the third set and SAU only held one lead in the fourth, that coming at 3-2 on a Jill Kavalauskas kill.

After the fast start, St. Ambrose totaled 24 kills against 22 hitting errors over the final three sets.

Koerner finished with a team-best nine kills while Hemm and Cunningham each registered seven. Kavalauskas put down six.

Amber Tomlin led all players with 29 assists, 16 of those coming in the first set. She also collected 10 digs. Alexis Hayes led the Bees with 15 digs and Grace McGrath picked up 12.

St. Ambrose (3-11, 2-3 CCAC) will host Indiana South Bend next Friday at 7 p.m.
