Bees survive in five to move to 2-0 in CCAC play

Abby Happ and Jenny Koerner each had two kills in the final set to help St. Ambrose rally for a 3-2 win over Roosevelt Tuesday night in Lee Lohman Arena.

The Bees battled back from a two-sets-to-one deficit and trailed by as many as three points in the decisive set before improving to a perfect 2-0 in conference play with a 25-19, 22-25, 17-25, 25-18, 15-12 victory.

Roosevelt (5-8, 1-1 CCAC) led 5-2 in that fifth set. Two Laker errors and a London Williams kill knotted the score at 5-5. Several points later, back-to-back kills from Brea Cunningham and Koerner evened the set at 9-9. After the teams traded points, Rachael Dion and Madisyn Johnson combined for a block and a 11-10 lead. It was a lead the Bees would not relinquish.

Two Laker errors extended the lead to 13-10 and Happ closed out the win with her match-best 20th kill of the night.

Five different Bees had at least one kill and the team had just two total hitting errors in the final set.

SAU (3-8, 2-0 CCAC) was able to extend the match thanks to a fast start in the fourth. Happ had two kills and Johnson had one as part of a 10-3 spurt to start the set. The Lakers were able to close to within three points at 14-11, but kills from Happ and Cunningham sparked a three-point run and the Bees were not threatened from there.

St. Ambrose, which has won three of its last four matches, had a balanced attack behind Happ, who picked up a team-best 16 digs to go along with her 20 kills.

Koerner totaled 12 kills and Cunningham finished with nine. Johnson and Dion each had four kills while Williams recorded three.

Amber Tomlin led all players with 38 assists. Grace McGrath registered 11 digs, Koerner had nine, Maicee Pierce had seven, and Tomlin and Alexis Hayes each added six. Koerner also had two of the team's three aces.

The Bees will put their undefeated start in conference play on the line Thursday when they host Cardinal Stritch. That match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
