SAU defeats Lyon in five sets for first win of 2019

Abby Happ had six of her match-high 22 kills in the fifth set to help St. Ambrose outlast Lyon College in the Bees' final match of the Park Pirate Invitational Saturday afternoon in Parkville, Mo.

The 25-19, 25-17, 22-25, 23-25, 15-12 victory was SAU's first of the year. Four of the team's seven losses have come against nationally-ranked teams, including three losses to top-10 teams.

The win came after St. Ambrose squandered a two-set lead. Lyon won the third and fourth sets and jumped to a 4-1 lead in the fifth. The Scots led 10-7 and 11-9 before the Bees rallied. Kills from Happ and Madisyn Johnson knotted the set at 11-11. The teams traded points, with another Happ kill evening the set at 12-12. A Lyon setting error gave SAU its first lead since the first point of the fifth and the Bees capitalized. Payton Wendt put down a kill for a 14-12 lead, and SAU got the win a point later on a Scot hitting error.

Happ had just one hitting error in the final set. Along with leading all players with the 22 total kills, she also totaled 11 digs.

Jenny Koerner recorded 13 kills and 10 digs. Wendt (6), Brea Cunningham (5) and Rachael Dion (4) combined for 15 kills in the win.

Amber Tomlin had a match-best 41 assists and Grace McGrath led all players with 25 digs. Emma Marshall picked up nine digs.

SAU started tournament play Friday by taking the opening set from Park-Gilbert (Ariz.) in an eventual 24-26, 25-20, 25-18, 25-23 setback.

Happ led the Bees with 15 kills and Johnson collected 13. Johnson and Cunningham each put down five. Tomlin led the way with 35 assists. Happ also had a team-best 12 digs. Tomlin and Mickey Hayes each had two of the team's six aces.

Later Friday, St. Ambrose fell to No. 1 Park (Mo.) 25-7, 25-19, 25-18. Happ and Johnson each had 10 kills. Tomlin registered 19 assists, while McGrath and Koerner were each credited with 12 digs.

Before Saturday's five-set win, the Bees dropped a 25-15, 25-10, 25-22 decision to No. 17 Central Methodist. Dion (8 kills), Tomlin (18 assists) and McGrath (9 digs) were the team leaders.

SAU (1-7) will play its home opener Tuesday night at 7 p.m. against Mount Mercy.
