Bees defeat Roosevelt to earn final CCAC Tournament spot

Needing a win and some help Thursday night, St. Ambrose got both.

The Bees took care of business with a 25-22, 25-11, 25-20 win at Roosevelt while Judson lost at Saint Xavier, giving SAU the eighth and final spot in the upcoming CCAC Tournament. St. Ambrose and Judson finished with identical 7-11 conference marks, but the Bees advance by virtue of winning five of the nine sets played head-to-head with the Eagles this season.

As the eighth seed, St. Ambrose will play a conference tournament quarterfinal at top seed Saint Xavier Tuesday night.

The Bees will enter the postseason after a strong performance to close the regular season.

SAU (12-20) collected 43 total digs and hit .278 for the match while Roosevelt (7-23, 5-13 CCAC) totaled 22 kills and hit .079.

Devan Porter had 14 of those kills against just three hitting errors and Riley Hummert put down nine kills in the win.

St. Ambrose led throughout the opening set only to watch the Lakers pull to within 22-21 late. With the lead at 23-22, Jessica Hemm had a big kill and Abby Happ followed with another to get the Bees off to a fast start.

After Roosevelt won the first three points of the second set, St. Ambrose won 25 of the next 33 points. Two kills from Porter came part of a four-point run that gave SAU a 4-3 lead. Later, strings of five and seven points helped the Bees cruise to the 2-0 lead.

The third set went back and forth with the score tied as late as 11-11 after a Hummert kill. A Roosevelt error was followed by Allie Brent's second ace of the night to give SAU a 13-11 lead, a lead the team would never relinquish. A Rachel Dion kill pushed the lead to 23-14 before a kill from Hummert and another from Dion closed out the win.

Dion finished with six kills, and Hemm and Happ each added five. Morgan Twing recorded 21 assists and Amber Tomlin had 16. Porter (13), Hummert (10) and Emma Marshall (10) each reached double figures in digs.

This will be the second straight year SAU will face Saint Xavier in the first round of the CCAC Tournament. The Cougars won last year's matchup in three sets. SXU swept the season series this year in two competitive matches, winning 25-19, 25-23, 21-25, 25-21 in Chicago on Sept. 4 and 27-25, 25-14, 25-23 in Davenport on Oct. 9.
