SAU gets two wins at final CCAC Crossover

St. Ambrose picked up two big wins at a CCAC Crossover hosted by Saint Xavier Friday and Saturday. The Bees defeated Indiana South Bend and took down Governors State both in four sets. SAU also fell to No. 21 Trinity Christian.

St. Ambrose, now 11-19 overall, moved to 6-10 in the CCAC to remain in the hunt for one of eight conference tournament bids.

The Bees have two matches remaining in the regular season, both on the road - at Robert Morris Tuesday and at Roosevelt Thursday.

After watching three match points disappear, SAU was able to close out Indiana South Bend 25-22, 22-25, 25-17, 25-23 in the team's only match Friday.

Devan Porter's match-high 19th kill closed out the victory. She also collected 15 digs. Riley Hummert had a double-double of 12 kills and 14 digs. Breanne Cunningham and Abby Happ each finished with nine kills, and Rachel Dion had five.

Morgan Twing led St. Ambrose with 31 assists while Amber Tomlin added 13. Emma Marshall picked up 16 digs.

Hummert earned another double-double - this time with team-leading totals of 14 kills and 11 digs - in the Bees' 25-19, 25-15, 23-25, 25-8 win over Governors State to close play Saturday.

Porter had seven kills, Happ and London Williams each added six, Cunningham had four, and Dion and Jessica Hemm each finished with three.

Tomlin paced the team with 18 assists while Twing was credited with 16. Marshall had seven digs in the win.

In between the victories came a 25-22, 25-18, 25-20 loss to the nationally-ranked Trolls Saturday morning.

SAU held leads of 19-17 and 20-19 in the opening set. With the score tied at 21-21, Trinity Christian won three straight points and four of the next five to take the opener.

It was a similar story in the third. St. Ambrose led by as many as six points at 15-9 and maintained a three-point lead as late as 18-15. A Jenny Koerner kill tied the set at 20-20 on what proved to be SAU's final point of the match as TCC closed things out with a 5-0 run.

Porter registered 12 kills and 15 digs in defeat. Hummert had eight kills, Happ finished with six and Madisyn Johnson added five. Twing (21) and Tomlin (14) again led the team in assists. Marshall picked up 12 more digs.

SAU's match at Robert Morris Tuesday will start at 7 p.m.
