St. Ambrose loses five-setter on Senior Night

After recognizing the four seniors playing at home for the final time, St. Ambrose got off to a fast start, taking a 2-1 lead over Trinity International. But the Trojans battled back to escape with a 25-17, 15-25, 22-25, 25-20, 15-9 win Tuesday night at Lee Lohman Arena.

Leading two-sets-to-one, the Bees fell behind early in the fourth and could never recover.

Kills by Devan Porter gave SAU leads of 2-1 and 5-4 in the decisive fifth set. But the Bees stalled there. TIU (19-13, 9-5 CCAC) won six of the next seven points to take a 10-6 lead. Kills from Porter and Abby Happ closed the margin to 11-9 before the Trojans ended the match with four straight points.

Porter, one of those four seniors along with Allie Brent, Morgan Twing and Jenna Laxton honored before the match, led all players with 19 kills. She also picked up 18 digs.

Riley Hummert matched Porter with 18 digs while also putting down 14 kills. Rachel Dion had 10 kills, against no hitting errors, in 18 attempts. Happ had seven kills and Jessica Hemm finished with six.

Twing had a team-high 29 assists and Amber Tomlin was credited with 19. Each setter also registered 12 digs.

Emma Marshall was the fifth Bee to reach double digits in digs, coming up with a team-best 21.

The Bees, still looking to claim one of the eight conference tournament berths, will close the regular season with five straight road matches, beginning with Friday's 3 p.m. battle with Indiana South Bend as part of the second CCAC Crossover event.
